Brookings Chutes go 2-2 at tournament in Fargo

FARGO, N.D. The Brookings Junior Legion Chutes went 2-2 in the Joe Palmer Invitational in Fargo over the weekend.

Brookings fell to Jamestown (North Dakota) 7-2 in its first game on Friday but then beat Renner 6-2 later in the day. The Chutes beat Wayzata 19-10 and then lost to Fargo 12-4 on Sunday.

The Bandits are now 8-5 on the season and host a doubleheader with Rapid City Post 320 on Thursday at 12 p.m.

Friday

Jamestown 7, Brookings 2

Brookings had just three hits and that led to loss in the Chutes first game of the tournament.

Jamestown scored two runs in the bottom of the second. The first came from an error and then an RBI single made it 2-0.

Brookings would tie the game in the top of fourth. Parker Witte hit an RBI single and then Baker Hanson scored on a steal of home to make it 2-2.

Jamestown regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth. A two-run single made it 4-2 and then runs from a ground out and a wild pitch pushed the lead to 6-2. Their final run of the game came on a sacrifice fly.

Witte was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Connor Jones was 1-for-3.

Andrew Heinze pitched a complete game for the Chutes and gave up seven runs, four earned on six hits with one strikeout and six walks.

Brookings 6, Renner 2

Brookings jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first four innings and that led to the bounce back win in the second game on Friday.

Noah Lease hit Nolan Krogman home with a single in the bottom of the first to make it 1-0. Ben Schulte then scored on a Hanson single in the third to make it 2-0. Witte came home on a wild pitch in the fourth and then Krogman scored on a Schulte sacrifice fly. Hanson then hit an RBI single to make it 5-0.

Renners first run of the game came on an error in the top of the fifth. Brookings then pushed the lead back to five in the bottom of the sixth with Lease scoring on a wild pitch. Renner scored a run in the top of the seventh but only one and that led to a 6-2.

Brookings had six hits in the win. Hanson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Lease was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Witte was 1-for-2 and Krogman was 1-for-4. Schulte had an RBI without a hit.

Krogman pitched a complete game for the Chutes. He gave up two unearned runs on four hits with nine strikeouts and five walks.

Saturday

Brookings 19, Wayzata 10

The Chutes scored eight runs in the first inning and that proved to be the difference in the game.

Brookings first six runs came from bases-loaded walks. Korgman and Witte then each scored on an error to make it 8-0.

Wayzata hit a two-run double in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 8-2.

Brookings then scored four runs in the top of the third. The first run came on another bases-loaded walk as Dixon Dauer drew the walk. Connor Jones then hit a bases-clearing double to make it 12-2.

Wayzata scored runs on a ground out and an error in the bottom of the third to make it 12-4. Three more runs came home for them in the fourth as they scored on an RBI single, an error and an RBI double to make it 12-7.

Hanson scored on an error in the top of the fifth and then Wayzata scored on a steal of home in the bottom of the inning to keep the lead at five.

Brookings put the game away in the top of the sixth. Meendering and Lease each walked with the bases loaded. Krogman then scored on a Hanson ground out and Schulte hit an RBI single. Lease scored on a Dauer ground out to make it 19-8.

The final runs of the game for Wayzata came on an error and a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth.

The Chutes had nine hits. Jones was 1-for-3 with four RBIs and Dauer was 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Hanson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Meendering was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Krogman, Witte and Lease were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Schulte was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Sutton Schneider pitched the first five and a third innings. He gave up 10 runs, five earned, on 11 hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Tate Sonnenburg got the final out and it was a strikeout.

Sunday

Fargo 12, Brookings 4

Fargo scored nine runs in the final two and a half innings to earn the victory in the Chutes final game of the tournament.

Fargo broke a 0-0 tie with two runs in the bottom of the second. Both runs came on a single.

Brookings then scored three runs in the top of the third to take the lead. Krogman scored on an error and Hanson hit Meendering home with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-2. Schulte then gave the Chutes the lead with an RBI double.

Fargo tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third. Brookings answered with an RBI single from Meendering in the top of the fourth to make it 4-3.

Fargo earned the lead in the bottom of the fourth. They tied the game with a run from a fielders choice and then a two-run triple made it 6-4. An RBI single pushed the lead to 7-4.

Fargo put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with five runs. The first run of the inning came on a ground out and then a two-run double made it 10-4. Two RBI singles made the final 12-4.

Brookings had just four hits. Meendering was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Schulte was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sonnenburg was 1-for-2.

Mason Diers pitched three and two thirds innings and gave up seven earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Hanson pitched the final two innings and gave up five earned runs on six hits with no strikeouts and three walks.
