SIOUX FALLS The Brookings Bombers White 13/14U team went 3-1 at the Sioux Falls Slam over the weekend.
The Bombers won their first three games before falling in the final one of the weekend. Brookings beat Brandon Valley 16-8 on Friday then topped Jordan (Minnesota) 18-1 and Minneapolis White 12-0 on Saturday. In their final game of the weekend the Bombers lost 16-4 to Lennox.
Brookings is now 11-3 and hosts a doubleheader with Volga on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Friday
Brookings 16, Brandon Valley 8
Brookings was up 11-2 in the first two innings and cruised to victory in its first game of the tournament.
The Bombers led 5-1 at the end of the first inning. Hayden Smidt scored on a ground out from Kuddyer Baugher to put the Bombers on the board and then Derek Jordan stole home to make it 2-0. Beau Thompson and Delton Brownell each scored on an error and then Hudson Vincent scored on a Landon Mosley single to make it 5-0. Brandon Valleys run came from a ground out in the bottom of the inning.
Brookings pushed the lead to 11-1 in the top of the second. Jordan hit a two-run double and then scored on a Baugher triple to make it 8-1. Thompson then hit an RBI triple of his own and Vincent and Mosley each hit RBI singles to make it a 10-run game.
Brandon Valley scored a run on a steal of home in the second to make it 11-2.
Runs from a bases-loaded walk, an RBI single and fielders choice in the bottom of the third cut the lead to 12-5. Then runs from an error and a wild pitch made it 12-7.
Brookings got two runs back in the top of the fourth. Mosley hit Vincent home with a triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Warner Carroll to make it 14-7.
Baugher scored on an error and Smidt scored on a Brownell single to push the lead to 16-7 in the top of the fifth. A run from a fielders choice in the bottom of the fifth made the final 16-8.
Brookings had 14 hits. Mosley was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Baugher was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Jordan was 2-for-4 with two RBIS and Brownell and Thompson were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Vincent was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Smidt was 3-for-3.
Saturday
Brookings 18, Jordan 1
The Bombers led 8-1 after two innings and then scored 10 runs in the third to end the game.
Derek Jordan hit an RBI single to get the scoring going for the Bombers and then Kahler hit an RBI single to make it 2-0. Kahler came home on a sacrifice fly from Baugher and Vincent scored on an error to push the lead to 4-0.
Jordan had a runner get hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning to make it 8-1.
Smidt sent Carroll and Lincoln Damm home with a two-run double in the second and then Jaxson Neuharth scored on an error to make it 7-1. Kahler later scored on a balk from a pitcher to extend the lead to 8-1.
Carroll, Thompson and Damm all hit an RBI single in the third to make it 11-1. Damm scored on a wild pitch and Griffin Streich scored on an error to make it 13-1. Jordan hit a two-run single and Neuharth scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 15-1. Baugher scored on a wild pitch, Mosley scored on a Vincent single and then Vincent came home on a wild pitch to make the final 18-1.
Brookings had 11 hits. Jordan was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Smidt was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Vincent was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Carroll was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Thompson and Kahler were each 1-for-2 with an RBI and Damm was 1-for-2.
Thompson pitched all three innings and gave one earned run and no hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Brookings 12, Minneapolis White 0
Brookings scored four runs in each of the first, third and fourth innings to earn the win in the second game on Saturday.
The first run of the game for the Bombers came on an inside the park home run from Smidt. Mosley, Baugher and Brownell each scored on an error and that made it 4-0 after the first inning.
Baugher scored on another error in the third and then an RBI double from Brownell made it 6-0. Brownell and Carroll then each scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-0.
Jordan hit Smidt home with a single in the fourth. Neuharth then scored on an error and Baugher hit an RBI single to make it 11-0. Thompson then sent Baugher home with a single to make the final 12-0.
The Bombers had seven hits in the win. Baugher was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Smidt was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Brownell was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Jordan and Thompson were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Caroll was 1-for-1 and Vincent had an RBI without a hit.
Kahler pitched a complete game and gave up two hits with seven strikeouts and five walks.
Sunday
Lennox 16, Brookings 4
Lennox scored eight runs in the first inning and that was enough to put the game away early in the Bombers final game of the weekend.
The first two runs of the game came from a double. Then a run from an error, a wild pitch and a single made it 5-0. A two-run single pushed the lead to 7-0 and another run from an error made it 8-0.
Brookings scored two runs in the top of the third. Streich hit Damm home with a triple and then he scored on a Smidt ground out to make it 8-2. Lennox scored another run on a wild pitch to make it 9-2 heading into the fourth.
Baugher scored on an error and Carroll sent Brownell home with a single to cut the lead to 9-4 in the top of the fourth. However, Lennox scored runs on a double and a single to make it 11-4 and then two runs on a fielders choice and a three-run inside the park home run ended the game.
Streich was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Carroll was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Kahler was 2-for-2 and Damm was 1-for-1. Smidt had an RBI without a hit.
