SIOUX FALLS The Brookings Bombers Gray 13/14U team went 2-2 in the Sioux Falls Slam over the weekend.
The Bombers lost their first two games of the tournament on Friday as they fell to Lennox 17-1 and Lake Elmo (Minnesota) 10-8. They bounced back with a 22-21 win over the Minneapolis Millers Blue on Saturday and then beat the Minneapolis Millers White 13-9 on Sunday.
Brookings is now 3-9 and plays a doubleheader at Sioux Falls Christian Blue on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Friday
Lennox 17, Brookings 1
Lennox scored 12 runs in the second and that led to the big win over the Bombers.
Lennox led 5-0 at the end of the first. The first run of the game came from an RBI double. Then a steal of home and bases-loaded walk made it 3-0. A two-run triple made it a five-run inning for Lennox.
A steal of home and then a two-run inside the park home run made it 8-0. An RBI single, an RBI double and a two-run single pushed the lead to 12-0. Another two-run inside the park home run made it 14-0. Then a sacrifice fly and an RBI single made it 16-0. The final run of the game for Lennox came on a bases-loaded walk.
Kale Weiker hit an RBI single for the Bombers in the top of the third but they were unable to cut the lead under 15 and the game ended.
Brookings had four hits. Wieker was 1-for-1 with an RBI. Teagan Wallace and Logan Schaar were each 1-for-1. Jess Johnson was 1-for-2.
Lake Elmo 10, Brookings 8
The Bombers offense bounced back with 15 hits in the second game of the tournament but they still gave up 10 runs and lost.
Lake Elmo led 6-3 after the first inning. An RBI single and then a three-run inside the park home run made it 4-0 for Lake Elmo in the top of the first. Then an RBI double and an RBI single made it 6-0.
Scharr made it 6-1 with an RBI double and then he was hit home by a Johnson single. A Shinji Numata RBI single cut the lead to 6-3.
Two RBI singles in the top of the second from Lake Elmo made it 8-3.
Brookings would then score three runs in the bottom of the third. Numata hit a two-run single and Liam Johnson hit an RBI single to make it 8-6.
An RBI single and run from a steal of home pushed the lead to 10-6 in the top of the fourth. Wallace scored on a steal of home in the bottom of the inning and then Schaar hit an RBI double later in the inning to make the final 10-8.
Numata was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Schaar was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Liam Johnson was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Jess Johnson was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Brayden Brintnall and Weiker were each 2-for-3. Wallace was 2-for-2 and Collin Andrews and Jay KC were each 1-for-2.
Saturday
Brookings 22, Minneapolis Blue 21
Brookings led 21-13 after the first two innings and then gave up the lead in the top of third. The Bombers won the game with a run bottom of third to win the game.
Minneapolis jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the top of the first. The first run of the game came from a walk and then a steal of home made it 2-0. Four runs then scored on an error and an RBI single made it 7-0. An RBI double and an RBI single pushed the lead to 10.
Brookings answered with 14 runs in the bottom of the inning. The first two runs came from a Weiker double. Then an RBI single from Jess Johnson and a two-run double from Numata cut the lead to 10-5. Liam Johnson then hit a two-run inside the park home run and an RBI single from Noah Hamann made it 10-8. Jay KC tied the game with a two-run single and then Wallace scored on a wild pitch to give the Bombers the lead. KC and Weiker each scored on a steal of home and the final run of the inning came on an RBI single from Liam Johnson.
Minneapolis cut the lead to one in the top of the second. The first run of the inning came from an RBI triple and then runs from a ground out and a single made it 14-13.
The Bombers extended the lead to 21-13 in the bottom of the second. KC and Schaar each hit an RBI single to make it 16-13. Then a two-run single from Weiker made it 18-13. A two-run double from Liam Johnson made it 20-13 and then an RBI single from Rocco Murano made it an eight-run game.
Minneapolis tied the game in the top of the third. A two-run double and RBI single made it 21-16. Then an RBI double and another two-run double made it a two-run game. Minneapolis then tied the game with a two-run single.
Brookings was able to walk the game off with a single from KC to make the final 22-21.
The Bombers had 19 hits. Liam Johnson was 3-for-3 with five RBIs and KC was 4-for-4 with four RBIs. Weiker was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and Numata was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Jess Johnson and Murano were each 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hamann was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Brintnall was 3-for-3. Andrews was 1-for-3 and Schaar was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Sunday
Brookings 13, Minneapolis White 9
Brookings jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first two and a half innings and that was enough of a cushion to get the win in its final game of the tournament.
The Bombers led 3-0 after the first inning. Brintnall scored on a wild pitch to get the scoring going. Weiker then hit an RBI double and scored on a steal of home.
Andrews hit Murano home with a single in the second to make it 4-0. Schaar then hit an RBI single in the third to make it 5-0. Weiker hit Schaar home with a double and an RBI single from Numata made it 8-0. Numata scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 9-0. The final two runs of the top of the third came on a single from Andrews.
Minneapolis scored five runs in the bottom of the third. Two RBI singles made it 11-2. Then an RBI double and a steal of home cut the lead to 11-5.
Brookings got two runs back in the top of the fourth. Schaar hit an RBI double and Jess Johnson hit an RBI single to make it 13-5.
Minneapolis final four runs came in the bottom of the fifth. The first was an RBI single and then a bases-loaded walk made it 13-7. Then two more RBI singles made the final 13-9.
The Bombers had 11 hits. Andrews was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Schaar and Weiker were each 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Numata was 1-for-3 with two RBIS and KC was 2-for-3. Jess Jonhson was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Brintnall was 1-for-1.
