Bandits go 2-2 at Marshall Wood Bat Tournament

MARSHALL, Minn. The Brookings Bandits went 2-2 in the Marshall Legion Wood Bat Tournament over the weekend.

The Bandits St. Peter (Minnesota) 7-3 in their opening game of the weekend on Friday. They then lost both games on Saturday, falling 18-9 to Luverne (Minnesota) first and 8-0 to Alexandria (Minnesota) second. In Brookings final game of the tournament on Sunday, the Bandits beat Kasson (Minnesota) 20-3.

Brookings is now 11-8 on the season. The Bandits will play a doubleheader at Yankton on Tuesday starting at 5 p.m.

Friday

Brookings 7, St. Peter 3

The Bandits led 7-1 after the first five innings and held St. Peter off the rest of the way.

Brookings led 2-1 at the end of the first inning. St. Peter scored a run off an RBI single in the top of the first. Cooper Schneider answered with a two-run triple in the bottom of the inning as Tre Christopherson and Jase Bauer scored to give the Bandits the lead.

The Bandits extended their lead to 5-1 in the second. Bauer hit Christopherson and Maxten Jensen with a double to make it 4-1. Bauer then scored on a Winston Plummer double to make it a four-run game.

Schneider hit Bauer home with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-1. Bolan Wagner then pushed the lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth as he hit Tyson Antonen home with a single.

St. Peter scored runs on two RBI singles in the top of the sixth to make the final 7-3.

Brookings had seven hits. Schneider was 1-for-3 with three RBIs and Bauer was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Plummer was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Wagner was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Christopherson and Tane Friedrich were each 1-for-3.

Kysin Reuer got the start on the mound for Brookings. He pitched five and two thirds innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and five walks. Ryan Lockrem pitched an inning and a third and gave up no runs or hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Saturday

Luverne 18, Brookings 9

Luverne led 13-6 through three innings and cruised to the victory in the Bandits second game of the tournament.

Each team scored two runs in the first. Antonen hit Christopherson and Bauer home with a single. Luverne then hit two RBI singles in the bottom of the inning to make it 2-2.

Jase Bauer was at the plate with Ryder Anderson on base in the top of the second and he hit one over the left field fence to make it 4-2.

Luverne then took the lead in the bottom of the second with six runs. They hit two RBI singles to tie the game. Then another RBI single and a two-run double made it 7-4. One more RBI single made it 8-4 heading into the third.

Brookings cut the lead in half in the top of the third as Jay Harris hit an RBI triple and then scored on an error on the play.

Luverne answered with five runs in the bottom of the third. They hit a two-run double, an RBI single and a two-run single to make it 13-6.

Luverne extended the lead to 16-6 in the bottom of the fourth. Their runs came from an RBI single, a ground out and an error.

Brookings scored three runs in the top of the fifth. Jensen hit Harris home with a single and Anderson scored on an error. Pummer then hit an RBI single to make it 16-9.

Two RBI doubles in the bottom of the sixth from Luverne made the final 18-9.

The Bandits had 10 hits in the loss. Bauer was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Antonen was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Plummer was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jensen and Harris were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Anderson was 1-for-3 and Breck Wilson was 1-for-1. Christopherson was 1-for-2.

Talon Hyde pitched the first two innings and gave up eight earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Bauer pitched an inning and gave up five runs, three earned, on four hits with one strikeout and two walks. Harris pitched two and two thirds and gave up five earned runs on five hits with one strikeout and three walks.

Alexandria 8, Brookings 0

The Bandits had no hits and that resulted in the eight-run loss in the second game of the day on Saturday.

Alexandria led 3-0 at the end of the first inning. The first run of the game came on a ground out and then a two-run single made it a three-run game.

Alexandria extended the lead to 5-0 in the top of the third. They scored runs on a ground out and an error.

It was 7-0 at the end of the fourth. Alexandria scored runs on a ground out and a single and then a run from a wild pitch in the top of the fifth made the final 8-0.

Schnedier pitched three innings and gave up five unearned runs on three hits with one strikeout and four walks. Lockrem pitched the final two innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Sunday

Brookings 20, Kasson 3 (5 inn.)

The Bandits got the offense going in their final game of the tournament with 20 runs.

Brookings led 3-0 at the end of the first. Harris hit Christopherson home with a single and then he and Antonen scored on a Wagner single to make it 3-0.

The Bandits stretched the lead 90 in the second. Schneider was walked with the bases loaded and then Antonen cleared the bases with a triple. Reuer hit Antonen home with a single and Wagner scored on a steal of home to make it a nine-run game.

Kasson scored a run on an error in the bottom of the second.

Schneider hit a three-run home run in the top of the third to make it 12-1. Wagner and Reuer then each hit an RBI double to push the lead to 14-1.

Brookings blew the game completely open with six runs in the top of the fifth. Reuer and Lockrem walked with the bases loaded. Harris scored on an error and then Friedrich and Schneider also walked with bases loaded. Wilson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the final run of the inning to make it 20-1.

Kasson scored runs on a single and an error in the bottom of the fifth but were unable to score any more runs and the game ended.

The Bandits had 13 hits. Schneider was 1-for-2 with five RBIs and Antonen was 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Wagner and Reuer were each 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Lockrem was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Jensen was 1-for-1. Christopherson was 2-for-3 and Anderson was 1-for-4.

Antonen pitched two and two thirds innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Christopherson pitched two and a third and gave up two unearned runs on four hits with one strikeout and no walks.
