Dorothy Olson

Dorothy Olson, 83, of Rutland, SD. passed away June 18, 2025, at The Neighborhoods at Brookview in Brookings, SD.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 23, at Grace Lutheran Church in Nunda, SD. with Pastor Phillip Hofinga officiating. Visitation was from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, June 22 at Grace Lutheran Church in Nunda with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday, June 23rd, one hour prior to the service at the church. A private family burial will be in Prairie Queen Cemetery following the service. Online registry book is at www.rustandweilandfuneral.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to Rustand-Weiland Funeral Chapel of Madison, SD.

Dorothy Ann (Miller) Olson was born April 13, 1942, in Arlington, SD. She grew up in rural Arlington and Nunda area. She attended the rural country school and Rutland High School. She married Kenwood Olson on November 7, 1959. Soon after, then moved to California until 1968. Upon returning to South Dakota, they have been lifelong Rutland area residents where they farmed. In 1994, they got out of the farming business by selling the machinery but kept the ground. Kenny started R & K Grading to care for the township roads in the area and Dorothy started to work for Larson Manufacturing in Brookings.
Anyone who knew Dorothy knew she was a horticulture enthusiast. Her passion for flowers was evident to anyone who drove by. Cultivating relationships with family, friends, and the community was more important. Everyone left the Olson home well fed and loved.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 65 years, Kenwood; daughter Kimberly Ahrenstorff (Jerry Caffee); granddaughter Brooke (Dallas) Mathern, and their children Blaze and Annabelle; granddaughter Brittney (Trent) Kelley; grandson Ty (Kayla) Ahrenstorff and their children Magnolia and Theodore; son Todd Olson (Tracey Schmidt) and grandson Braxton (Becca) Olson as well as extended family and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws; grandson Justin Olson; three brothers-in-law, Charlie Sides, Forrest Torgrude and Roger Olson and sister-in-law, Nona Foster.
