Arrest made in Brookings burglary spree

BROOKINGS A Brookings resident has been arrested following a series of burglaries and vehicle break-ins that occurred from June 5 to June 8.

Steven L. Hazen, 40, is facing a series of charges in the wake of his arrest on June 8, according to information from Detective Sgt. Rhett Larsen with the Brookings Police Department. Those charges, confirmed by Brookings County States Attorney Dan Nelson, are:

  • First-degree burglary
  • Grand theft over $1,000
  • Possession of a controlled Drug or substance
  • Ingestion of a controlled Drug or substance
  • Criminal entry of a motor vehicle
  • Hazen also has multiple outstanding arrest warrants

Larsen wrote in a news release that the incidents occurred in neighborhoods across the city, and that a total of four residential garages and 11 vehicles were involved. Hazen is accused of taking electronics, personal items and cash.

Hazen remained in the Brookings County Detention Center as of Friday morning.

The Brookings Police Department would like to encourage residents to remain vigilant and report any unusual and suspicious activity, Larsen said. Please always lock your doors and windows, and do not leave valuables in plain sight inside of your vehicle, garage or residence.
