Monarchs come back to beat Cubs in Brookings

BROOKINGS Renner came back from six runs down to beat the Brookings Cubs 11-9 in an amateur baseball game at Bob Shelden Field on Thursday night.

The Monarchs outscored the Cubs 8-0 in the final five innings to get the win.

Renner went up 2-0 in the top of the first. Corey Vasquez walked to lead off the game and Chaz Palmer followed with a single. David Borchardt then hit both runners home with a double.

Isaac Bonner led off the bottom of the inning with a double and Rhett Zelinsky followed with a walk. Bonner came home on a Noah Buss single and Winghart scored on an error to make it 3-2. Heading into the second.

Renner would tie the game in the top of the second. Cole Kraemer led off with a single and then scored on a two-out double from Palmer to make it 3-3.

Zelinsky hit a one-out single in the bottom of the second and then Myles Rees hit him home with a two-out double. It looked like the inning was going to end when Buss hit a fly ball to center field but the center fielder misplayed the ball and it dropped to score Rees. Justin Cofell was then walked and Arlen Peters was hit by a pitch to load the bases up. Walks from Tucker Wookey, Nolan Miles and Bonner scored three more runs to make it 8-3 after two innings.

Zelinsky came to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the fifth and hit one over the left field fence to make it 9-3.

Renner would cut the lead to 9-6 in the top of the seventh. Palmer walked to lead off the inning and then scored on a two-out triple from Adam Durfee. Aiden Laad then hit a two-run home run to left field.

The Monarchs tied the game in the top of the eighth. Kraemer reached on an error and then scored on a single from Nick Bartels. Palmer and Tony Lanier then each walked to load the bases up with one out. Borchardt hit Palmer and Bartels home with a single to tie the game.

Brookings went down one-two-three in the bottom of the eighth and that marked three-straight innings of no hits for the Cubs. Maddux Baggs was walked to begin the ninth and Bartels was hit by a pitch with one out to put two runners on. Vasquez then hit both runners home with a triple and made it 11-9 heading into the final half inning.

Buss led off the bottom of the ninth with a single but then Cofell hit into a double play. Peters then grounded out to end the game.

Brookings had nine hits in the loss. Zelinsky was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Buss was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Bonner was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Winghart and Rees were each 1-for-5 with an RBI. Peters was 2-for-3 and Wookey and Miles each had an RBI without a hit.

Jake Amman got the start for the Cubs and pitched four innings. He gave up three earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Peters pitched the next four innings and gave up six runs, five earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Wookey pitched the ninth inning and gave up two earned runs on two hits with no strikeouts and one walk.

Brookings is now 9-3 and plays at the Sioux Falls Brewers on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
