BROOKINGS The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team swept Mitchell in a doubleheader at Bob Shelden Field on Thursday afternoon.
The Bombers held off Mitchell in game one, winning 8-7, and then won game two 6-2. Brookings is now 5-12 and will not play again until it hosts a doubleheader with Renner on July 2.
Game 1 : Brookings 8, Mitchell 7
Brookings scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead and then only allowed Mitchell to score one run in the top of the sixth to earn the victory in game one.
Mitchell led 4-2 at the end of the first. They scored two runs on a single and then runs from a ground out and a wild pitch made it 4-0.
Elias Wagner led off the bottom of the first with a walk and then stole second and third. He then came home on a wild pitch. Owen Rounds walked as well and would come home on a Mason Hegerfeld single to cut the lead in half.
Mitchell made it 5-2 in the top of the second with a run from an error.
Brookings then added two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Tegan Jensen was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He then came home on a single from Wagner with two outs. Wagner would then score on an error to make it 5-4 heading into the third.
Mitchell doubled its lead with a run from a wild pitch in the top of the fourth.
The Bombers then gained the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Wagner hit a lead-off single and Rounds followed with a walk. Wagner scored on a double from John Romsa and Rounds scored on a single from Diers to tie the game. Romsa would then score on a ground out from Hegerfeld and Bennett Porter hit Diers home with a single to make it 8-6.
Mitchell scored a run on a two-out double in the top of the sixth but was unable to get that runner home as the next batter popped out to the first baseman to end the game.
Brookings had seven hits. Wagner was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Romsa was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hegerfeld was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Diers was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Cullen Torgrude pitched the first four innings for Brookings and gave up six runs, five earned, on five hits with one strikeout and four walks. Wagner pitched the final two innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
Game 2: Brookings 6, Mitchell 2
The Bombers scored three runs in both the fourth and fifth inning and that led to the doubleheader sweep.
Brookings broke a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. Rounds hit a lead-off single and then Romsa was hit by a pitch and Diers walked to load the bases up with no outs. Rounds and Romsa each scored on a wild pitch then Diers came home on a Hegerfeld single to make it 3-0.
Mitchell got one run back in the top of the fifth with a run from a wild pitch.
Wagner hit a one-out single in the bottom of the inning and Rounds was hit by a pitch. Diers then came to the plate with two outs and hit Wagner home with a single. Both Romsa and Diers then scored on a single from Hegerfeld to make it 6-1 heading into the final half inning.
Mitchell scored another run on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth but were unable to score anymore runs.
The Bombers had five hits in the win. Hegerfeld was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Diers was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Rounds was 1-for-2 and Wagner was 1-for-3.
Romsa pitched the first five innings and gave up one earned run on five hits with eight strikeouts and five walks. Rounds pitched the final inning and gave up one earned run on one hit with two strikeouts and one walk.
