PIERRE The Brookings Bombers White 13/14U team went 2-1 in a tournament in Pierre over the weekend.
The Bombers beat Stanley County 16-1 in their first game Saturday and then topped Harrisburg 9-3 later in the day. Brookings then fell to Madison 14-3 on Sunday.
Brookings is 7-2 on the season and plays the Sioux Falls Chargers on Tuesday on the road.
Saturday
Brookings 16, Stanley County 1
Brookings scored nine runs in the fifth inning and that led to the large victory for the Bombers.
The Bombers led 5-0 at the end of the first inning. Beau Thompson hit an RBI double to get the scoring going and then later in the inning Lucas Kahler hit a two-run double to make it 3-0. Lincoln Damm then hit Kahler home with a single and later scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 5-0.
Stanley County got on the board in the bottom of the second with a run from a wild pitch.
Brookings then scored two runs in the top of the fourth. Landon Mosley hit Griffin Streich home with a single and then Warner Carroll scored on a passed ball to make it 7-1.
The Bombers then ended the game with their big fifth inning. Derek Jordan hit an RBI single and then Kahler followed with an RBI double to make it 9-1. Carroll then hit Kahler and Kuddyer Baugher home with a double. Mosley hit an RBI double later in the inning and then a two-run single from Hayden Smidt made it 14-1. Smidt would score on a passed ball and then Jordan ended the game with an RBI single.
Brookings had 11 hits. Kahler was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Mosley and Carroll each were 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Jordan was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Smidt was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Damm was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Thompson was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Jordan pitched the first four innings for Brookings. He gave up one earned run on two hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Delton Brownell pitched the final inning and gave up one hit with two strikeouts and no walks.
Brookings 9, Harrisburg 3
Brookings scored in all six innings and came away with the win.
The Bombers led 2-1 after the first inning. Jaxson Neuharth scored on an error by the catcher and Kahler scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Harrisburg hit an RBI double in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead in half.
Brookings scored two more runs in the top of the second. Streich hit Brownell home with a double and then Streich scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 4-1.
Neuharth scored again on an error in the top of the third to make it 5-1 and then a sacrifice fly from Smidt in the fourth scored Streich and made it 6-1.
Kahler scored on a Brownell ground out in the fifth. Harrisburg then scored runs on a wild pitch and a ground out in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-3.
Brookings put the game away in the sixth with two runs. Streich and Neuharth each scored on a wild pitch to make the final 9-3.
The Bombers had five hits. Streich was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Brownell was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Hudson Vincent and Kahler were each 1-for-2 and Jordan was 1-for-4. Smidt had an RBI without a hit.
Streich pitched a complete game for Brookings. He gave up three earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Sunday
Madison 14, Brookings 3
Madison scored 10 runs in the fourth inning and that ended the game due to the 10-run rule.
Brookings led 1-0 at the end of the first inning as Thompson hit Smidt home with a sacrifice fly.
Madison then scored four runs in the top of the third. The first run came from an RBI single and then a two-run double made it 3-1. Then a sacrifice fly made it 4-1.
Jordan hit Brownell home with a single in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 4-2. However, Madison answered with 10 runs in the top of the fourth.
A batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then a run from a wild pitch and a two-run triple made it 8-2. Then an RBI single and a two-run single pushed the lead to 11-2. Three more RBI singles made it 14-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
The Bombers needed to score at least three runs to extend the game but only scored one. The run came on an error to make the final 14-3.
Brookings had five hits. Smidt and Jordan were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Baugher was 1-for-1 and Kahler and Brownell were each 1-for-2.
Baugher pitched three innings and gave up four earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Kahler pitched and did not record an out. He gave up four earned runs on one hit and had two walks and no strikeouts. Smidt pitched an inning and gave up six runs, three earned, on six hits with one walk and no strikeouts.
