Brookings Chutes go 2-1 in tournament in Minnesota

MINNETONKA, Minn. The Brookings Junior Legion Chutes went 2-1 in the Melde Meltdown Tournament over the weekend.

The Chutes came away with a 9-1 win over West Fargo on Saturday and later in the day defeated Starbuck (Minnesota) 8-1. They then fell to Wayzata (Minnesota) 10-0 on Sunday.

Brookings is now 4-3 and hosts a doubleheader with Sioux Falls East on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Saturday

Brookings 9, West Fargo 1

Brookings scored in every inning and that led to its eight-run victory.

The Chutes went up 1-0 in the first when Nolan Krogman scored on a wild pitch. West Fargo tied the game in the top of the second with an RBI double.

Brookings would regain the lead in the bottom of the second with two runs. Krogman was walked with the bases loaded and then Tate Sonnenburg scored on a Jude Meendering fielders choice to make it 3-1.

A sacrifice fly from Andrew Heinze scored Dixon Dauer in the bottom of the third to make it 4-1. Ben Schulte then hit Noah Lease home with a single in the fourth to push the lead to 5-1.

Brookings then scored four more runs. Mason Diers scored on a Sonnneburg bunt and then Heinze scored on an error to make it 7-1. Sonnenburg then came home on a sacrifice fly from Lease and Krogman later scored to make the final 9-1.

Brookings had four hits. Krogman was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Sonnenburg was 1-for-1 with an RBI. Schulte was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Diers was 1-for-2. Meendering, Lease and Heinze all had RBIs without a hit.

Lease pitched the first three innings and gave up one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Diers pitched the final two innings and gave up one hit and had two strikeouts and no walks.

Brookings 8, Starbuck 1

Brookings scored five runs in the sixth inning to pull away from Starbuck and get the win.

The Chutes broke a 0-0 tie with three runs in the third. Meendering hit Parker Witte home with a single and then he and Krogman scored on a Schulte single to make it 3-0.

Starbuck scored a run on an RBI double in the top of the fifth.

Krogman then hit Heinze and Sutton Schneider home with a single in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-1. Schulte then came to the plate with the bases loaded and cleared the bases with a triple, making it 8-1 heading into the final half inning.

Brookings had seven hits. Schulte was 2-for-3 with five RBIs and Krogman was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Meendering was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Lease was 1-for-2.

Krogman pitched four and two thirds innings and gave up one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Meendering pitched two innings and gave up no runs and one hit with one strikeout and one walk. Dauer got the final out of the game.

Sunday

Wayzata 10, Brookings 0

The Chutes had just one hit and Wayzata scored nine runs in the final two innings to put the game away.

Wayzata led 1-0 after the first as they scored a run on an RBI single. Then a run on an error and another RBI single made it 3-0 heading into the seventh.

Another RBI single and a run from an error pushed the lead to 6-0. Then a two-run single, a sacrifice fly and another RBI single made the final 10-0.

Meendering had Brookings only hit and he was 1-for-3. Heinze pitched the first six innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Diers pitched a third of an inning and gave up six runs, one earned, on one hit with two walks and no strikeouts. Dauer pitched two thirds of an inning and gave up one earned run on two hits with no strikeouts or walks.
