BROOKINGS The Brookings Bombers Black 14U team split four games in the Cubbys Classic in Brookings over the weekend.
The Bombers beat the Sioux Falls Chargers 10-2 on Friday night and then won their first game on Saturday with a 17-9 victory over Sioux Falls East. They then lost to SSA Sioux Falls White 4-1 in their second game on Saturday before falling to Mitchell 9-6 on Sunday.
Brookings is now 7-8 on the season and plays a doubleheader at Sioux Falls East on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Friday
Brookings 10, Sioux Falls 2
Brookings scored eight runs in the first inning and that propelled the Bombers to a win in the opening game of the tournament on Friday night.
Back-to-back RBI singles from Hayden Jones and Jones Huntimer put the Bombers up 2-0. Cooper Drawdy then scored on a wild pitch and Jones stole home to make it 4-0. Ty Johnson then hit a sacrifice fly to score Huntimer and Ty Delbridge scored on an error to push the lead to 6-0. Mason Burzlaff hit a two-run single to make it 8-0 heading into the second.
Sioux Falls got on the board with a run in the top of the third and it came from a wild pitch. Johnson then scored on a Mason Burghardt ground out in the bottom of the third to make it an eight-run game again.
An RBI single from Sioux Falls in the top of the fourth made it 9-2 and then a Delbridge RBI single in the bottom of the fourth made the final 10-2.
Brookings had 10 hits in the win. Burzlaff was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Jones was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Huntimer and Delbridge were each 1-for-2 with an RBI and Jonhnson was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Drawdy was 1-for-3 and Dario McSweeney was 2-for-3. Burghardt had an RBI without a hit.
Delbridge pitched a complete game for the Bombers. He gave up two earned runs on four hits and had three strikeouts and four walks.
Saturday
Brookings 17, Sioux Falls East 9
The Bombers scored in every inning and had 14 hits in the win on Saturday.
Each team scored four runs in the first. Sioux Falls Easts first two runs came from an error and then a two-run single made it 4-0.
Drawdy hit a two-run double in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead in half. Delbridge then hit an RBI single and Jones scored on an error to tie the game.
The Bombers took the lead in the second when Drawdy hit a single and then an error by the center fielder allowed Burzlaff to score and made it 5-4.
Sioux Falls East would regain the lead in the top of the third. The first run came on an error and then a bases-loaded walk made it 6-5. They then scored a run on fielders choice and a ground out to make it 8-5.
Brookings would then score five runs in the bottom of the inning. McSweeney was walked with the bases loaded and Burzlaff hit an RBI single to make it 8-7. Burghardt would then score on a passed ball and both Burzlaff and McSweeney scored on an error to make it 10-8.
An RBI double from Sioux Falls East in the top of the fourth made it a one-run game.
The Bombers responded with five more runs in the bottom of the fourth. McSweeney was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then Burzlaff hit another RBI single to make it 12-9. Drawdy drew a bases-loaded walk and Jones hit an RBI single to make it 14-9. The final run of the inning came when Huntimer was hit by a pitch the bases loaded.
Brookings would push two more across in the fifth. Burzlaff was walked with the bases loaded and Drawdy hit an RBI single to make the final 17-9.
Drawdy was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Burzlaff was 3-for-3 with three RBIs. McSweeney was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Johnson was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Delbridge was 2-for-4 with an rBI and Jones was 2-for-3 an RBI. Carter Nielsen was 1-for-3 and Huntimer had an RBI without a hit.
Grayson Wagner pitched the first two innings and gave up seven runs, four earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Jones pitched the next inning and gave up one earned run on one hit with two walks and no strikeouts. Drawdy gave up one earned run on three hits with no strikeouts or walks.
SSA Sioux Falls 4, Brookings 1
The Bombers offense couldnt get going in their second game on Saturday as they had just four hits.
Sioux Falls scored a run in each of the first two innings. The first run came on an RBI single and then an RBI double made it 2-0.
Brookings would cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth when Delbridge hit Drawdy home with a single.
Sioux Falls scored two insurance runs in the sixth. The first came on an RBI single and then a steal of home made the final 4-1 as Brookings was unable to score any runs in the seventh.
Delbridge was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Drawdy was 2-for-3. McSweeney was 1-for-3.
Drawdy pitched the first five innings and gave up two earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Burzlaff pitched one inning and gave up two earned runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Sunday
Mitchell 9, Brookings 6
Brookings led 4-3 after three innings but then five runs in the fourth from Mitchell allowed them to come away with the win.
The Bombers scored two runs in the top of the first. Huntimer came to the plate with two guys on and hit Jones and Drawdy home with a double. Mitchell scored a run on an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to make it 2-1 after one.
Brookings then scored two more runs in the top of the third. Jones hit Burzlaff home with a sacrifice fly and Delbridge hit an RBI double to make it 4-1.
Two RBI singles from Mitchell in the bottom of the third made it a one-run game. Then an RBI double and two RBI singles gave Mitchell a 6-4 lead in the fourth. A run from an error and another RBI single pushed the lead to 8-4 and then a run on a wild pitch in the sixth made it 9-4.
Brookings was able to score two runs in the top of the seventh but that wasnt enough. Drawdy hit an RBI single and then Burzlaff scored on an error to make the final 9-6.
The Bombers had five hits. Huntimer was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Delbridge was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Drawdy was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Burzlaff was 1-for-3. McSweeney was 1-for-4 and Jones had an RBI without a hit.
Burzlaff pitched the first three and two thirds innings. He gave up seven runs, three earned on 11 hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Delbridge pitched an inning and two thirds and gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits. Jones got the final two outs and gave up no runs or hits.
