Bombers Red go 2-3 in Cubby’s Classic

BROOKINGS The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team went 2-3 in the Cubbys Classic over the weekend in Brookings.

The Bombers lost 6-5 to Yankton on Friday afternoon and then fell to Jamestown (North Dakota) 6-4 in the first game of the day on Saturday. They then lost to Marshall (Minnesota) 12-3 later in the day on Saturday and then beat Renner 16-7 in the final game of the day on Saturday. In the final game of the tournament on Sunday Brookings beat the Sioux Falls Chargers 16-15.

The Bombers are 3-10 on the season and play a doubleheader at Tea on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Friday

Yankton 6, Brookings 5

Yankton scored a run in the top of the sixth to break a 5-5 tie and then held off the Bombers in the bottom of the inning to win the game.

Yankton led 4-0 after the first two innings. They scored a run on an error and then a two-run single made it 3-0 after the first inning. Then a run on a wild pitch made it a four-run lead heading into the third.

Yankton scored a run on a single to make it 5-0 in the top of the fifth. Brookings then scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

Cade Jaacks hit a fly ball to right field and there was an error by the right fielder that allowed Jax Sonnenburg to score. Elias Wagner then hit a two-run double and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-4. Kort Henderson then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

The game-winning run for Yankton came on a ground out in the top of the sixth. Brookings had runners on first and third with two outs but Jaacks struck out to end the game.

Brookings had three hits. Wagner was 1-for-1 with two RBIs and Sonnenburg and Owen Rounds were each 1-for-2.

John Romsa pitched five innings for the Bombers and gave up five runs, four earned, on five hits with four strikeouts and six walks. Jaacks pitched one inning and gave up one earned run and no hits with one walk and no strikeouts.

Saturday

Jamestown 6, Brookings 4

Jamestown scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning and then the Bombers were unable to score any in the bottom of the inning and suffered another close loss.

Brookings led 2-1 after the first inning but there was no information on GameChanger as to how those runs were scored.

Jamestown then scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead. Both runs came on RBI singles to make it 3-2.

Brookings would regain the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Wagner hit a single that sent Jaacks home and then Wagner scored on a Rounds single to make it 4-3.

Jamestown would tie the game in the top of the sixth with a run from a wild pitch. They then scored a run on a double and another run on a bases-loaded walk in the eighth to get the win.

The Bombers had two hits. Rounds was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Wagner was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Bennett Porter pitched three innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Sonnenburg pitched two and a third innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on one hit with three strikeouts and four walks.

Marshall 12, Brookings 3

Marshall scored seven runs in the first inning after Brookings scored one and that led to the big win for them.

Rounds scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first to give the Bombers a 1-0 lead. Marshall then scored runs on an RBI single and a ground out to make it 2-1. Then a two-run double and a run from an error made it 5-1. A two-run single then pushed the lead to 7-1.

Marshall then scored two runs in the bottom of the second. The first run came on an error and then a sacrifice fly made it 9-1.

Two more runs came across in the bottom of the third. The first on a single and the second on a double to make it 11-1.

Brookings scored two runs in the top of the fourth. Weston Diers hit Romsa home on a double and then he scored on a double from Wagner to make it 11-3. Marshall scored a run on a ground out to make it 12-3.

Brookings had seven hits. Diers was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Wagner was 1-for-2 with an rBI. Henderson, Rounds and Romsa were all 1-for-3. Porter was 1-for-1 and Tegan Jensen was 1-for-2.

Cullen Togrude pitched a complete game and gave up 12 runs, seven earned, on 11 hits with five walks and no strikeouts.

Brookings 16, Renner 7

Brookings scored seven runs in the top of the sixth to pull away from Renner.

The Bombers scored three runs in the top of the first. Romsa hit a two-run double and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Diers.

Renner then scored four runs in the bottom of the inning. The first run came from an RBI single and then a run on a ground out made it 3-2. Then a two-run double gave Renner a 4-3 lead.

Brookings answered with two runs in the top of the third. Mason Hegerfeld hit an RBI single to tie the game and then Wagner hit Diers home with a single to make it 5-4.

The Bombers extended the lead to 9-4 in the top of the fourth. Wagner hit Jensen home with a fielders choice and then Hegerfeld hit a two-run single to make it 8-4. The final run of the inning came on a single from Wagner.

Renner would cut the lead to 9-7 in the bottom of the fourth. The first two runs came on bases-loaded walks and then a batter getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded made it a two-run game.

Rounds and Romsa each scored on errors in the top of the sixth to make it 11-7. Diers then came home on a wild pitch and then an RBI single from Wagner made it 13-7. A bases-loaded walk and Jensen hit an RBI single to make it 15-7. The final run of the game for the Bombers came on a fielders choice from Henderson.

Hegerfeld was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Wagner was 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Romsa was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Diers was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Henderson was 2-for-5 with an RBI and Jensen was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Rounds was 1-for-3 and Sonnenburg was 2-for-4. Jaacks had an RBI without a hit.

Henderson pitched three and two thirds innings and gave up seven runs, four earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and six walks. Sonnenburg pitched the final two and a third and gave up no runs or hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Sunday

Brookings 16, Sioux Falls 15

Jensen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and that won the game in the tournament finale for the Bombers.

The Chargers scored three runs in the top of the first. The first run came on a wild pitch and then two runs came home on a ground out to make it 3-0.

Brookings got two runs back in the bottom of the first. Wagner was walked with the bases loaded and then Rounds scored on an error to make it 3-2.

Sioux Falls scored five runs in the top of the third. The first two runs came on bases-loaded walks and then a run on a fielders choice made it 6-2. Then runs from a wild pitch and an error pushed the lead to 8-2.

Wagner scored a run on a wild pitch made it 8-3 but then Sioux Falls scored runs on a single and a double to make it 10-3.

Romsa hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 10-4. Brookings then tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Porter and Torgrude hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it 10-6. Then Henderson and Togrude each scored on an error to make it 10-8 and a two-run single from Diers tied the game.

Sioux Falls scored five runs in the top of the sixth. The Chargers scored runs on back-to-back RBI singles and then an RBI double made it 13-10. Then another RBI single and a run on a wild pitch pushed the lead to 15-10.

Brookings scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game again. Jensen, Torgrude and Henderson all walked with the bases loaded. Jensen then scored on an error and Romsa hit an RBI single to make it 15-15 heading into the seventh.

Brookings had eight hits. Romsa was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Torgrude was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Diers was 1-for-5 with two RBIs and Henderson was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Rounds and Porter were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Jensen had two RBIs without a hit and Wagner had one RBI without a hit.
