BROOKINGS The Brookings Cubs took care of business on Thursday night against the Milroy Irish at Bob Shelden Field as they came away with a 6-2 win.
Arlen Peters and Lincoln Vasgaard combined to pitch eight shutout innings for the Cubs. Each pitcher only gave up one hit. Peters had 10 strikeouts and one walk and Vasgaard had three strikeouts and no walks.
Brookings struck for two runs in the bottom of the first. Isaac Bonner and Colin Gibson hit back-to-back singles to lead off the half inning. Both runners advanced on a Chase McDaniel ground out and then scored on a single from Henry Hammrich.
The Cubs pushed the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third. Gibson hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a ground out from McDaniel. Hammrich then came through again as he hit Gibson home with a double to make it 3-0.
Brookings scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. McDaniel led off with a single and made it to second on a fielders choice. Parker Winghart then hit a single to put two runners on. Hammrich would score on a single from Noah Buss and then he and Winghart came home on a single from Justin Cofell to extend the lead to 6-0.
The Irish would score two runs in the ninth to make the final 6-2. D Smith walked with one out and then scored on a double from T Peterson. Later in the inning Peterson scored on an error.
Hammrich pitched the final inning. He gave up two runs, one earned, on one hit with two strikeouts and one walk.
Brookings had 10 hits in the win. Hammrich was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Buss and Cofell were each 1-for-4 with an RBI. Winhghart and Gibson were each 2-for-4. Bonner was 1-for-2 and Gibson was 2-for-4.
The Cubs are now 8-2 on the season. Theyll host the Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
