High school boys, 130 juniors and seniors in total, were delegates to the 82nd Annual Session of The American Legion Boys State of South Dakota. Boys State officer elections were June 5, and Director Doug Harris announced the winners after lunch.
They were as follows:.
Brody Tynan of Sioux Falls was elected governor, while Alex Smith of Sioux Falls and Lewis Carlyle of Rapid City were selected as the two delegates to represent South Dakota at The American Legion Boys Nation in Washington, D.C., in July for a week of learning and networking. Each received a $1,000 scholarship.
Johnathan Burleson of Lead was selected as the 2025 recipient of the Samsung, American Legion Scholarship award. Johnathans application has been sent to the National American Legion Selection Committee, who will award ten, $10,000 scholarships to national finalists.
Other $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Alex Smith of Sioux Falls, who received the Chandler L. Beach Spirit of Boys State Award; Ivan Stuwe from Hoven for Outstanding Citizen; Brody Westall from Madison, who was named the Outstanding Speaker; and Will Van Schepen from Sioux Falls, who was selected by his peers as the chief justice of the Supreme Court. Rhys Heiberger of Brookings was named outstanding journalist. Morgan Christensen of Volga was elected the commissioner of school and public lands.
American Legion Boys State of South Dakota was on the campus of Northern State University in Aberdeen, June 2-6.
