No Kings! Flag Day, family friendly event set in Brookings

This Saturday, June 14, is cause for celebration across the country: Its Flag Day, commemorating the adoption of our nations flag; the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army; and President Trumps 79th birthday,

But the day is also cause for concern among many Americans concern that stems, in part, from the image, above, posted on the White Houses official X account in February.

In America, we dont put up with would-be kings. NO KINGS is a national day of action and mass mobilization in response to increasing authoritarian action from President Trump and his administration and efforts to concentrate power in the Oval Office. Weve seen free speech suppressed on college campuses, people detained for their political views, threats to deport American citizens, and defiance of the courts.

This Saturday, June 14, the nonpartisan group, Brookings Area Indivisible, is holding a combination celebration and demonstration from 1 to 3 p.m. on the north side of Hillcrest Park. Itll be a family-friendly event including a peaceful demonstration along Sixth Street plus fun activities for kids and adults. Lets celebrate the day by having fun and recognizing the flag and all it stands for.

The public is invited to join the peaceful demonstration and/or drop by for fun and games.

Participants may bring their own signs with democracy-related themes, pick up a premade sign from the BAI group, or just stand in solidarity with the demonstrators.

This is an opportunity for everyone to stand up for democracy and remind Donald Trump that he is our president, not a king.
