ELKTON The Brookings Cubs got back in the win column on Tuesday night as they beat the Elkton Snappers 4-3 on the road.
Brookings led 4-0 heading into the final inning and a half and held off the Snappers to earn the win.
The Cubs broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the fifth with three runs. Isaac Bonner and Rhett Zelinsky led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Bonner scored on a sacrifice fly from Chase McDaniel and Zelinsky scored on the throw to make it 2-0. Henry Hammrich came to plate next and hit it over the left field fence to make it 3-0.
Bonner led off the top of the eighth with a double. He then scored on a McDaniel single to push the lead to 4-0.
Elkton cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth. Aiden Stewart led off the inning with a solo home run to right field. Dylan Kuehl followed with a walk and Devin Sopko reached on an error and Corey Henneberg walked with one out to load the bases up. Then walks to Logan Kuehl and Brady Steffen scored two runs to make it a one-run game going into the ninth.
Brookings went down one-two-three in the top of the ninth. Stewart walked with one out and Charlie Harming walked with two outs to put two runners on. Harming was then caught stealing trying to steal second and that ended the game.
Brookings had 11 hits. McDaniel was 1-for-2 with three RBIs and Zelinsky was 2-for-3. Hammrich was 2-for-4 and Bonner and Justin Cofell were each 2-for-5. Lincoln Vasgaard and Arlen Peters were each 1-for-5.
Zach Shastay pitched the first seven and a third innings. He gave up three runs, two earned, on two hits with nine strikeouts and six hits. Jake Ammann pitched the final inning and two thirds and gave up no runs or hits and had three strikeouts and three walks.
Brookings is now 7-2 and hosts the Milroy Irish at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
