HURON The Brookings Bullets 16U team split a doubleheader with Huron on Tuesday night.
It was a tale of two games as the Bullets won game one 12-2 and Huron won game two 14-4. Brookings is now 5-7 and plays in a tournament in Sioux Falls this weekend.
Game 1: Brookings 12, Huron 2
The Bullets dominated game one as they led 11-0 through the first three and a half innings.
Brookings scored one run in the top of the first. Lincoln Helmbolt was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. Grant Horn then singled and Eli Ellsworth was hit by a pitch as well to load the bases up. Rylan Hesser then hit Helmbolt home with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
The Bullets scored two runs in the second. Aiden Adelman was walked with one out and then Horn and Ellsworth each reached on an error to load the bases up with two outs. Horn and Adelman then scored on a single from Hesser to make it 3-0.
Brookings scored three more runs in the third. Jace Jaacks hit a triple to lead off the inning and then scored on a Mack Nelson single. Nelson then scored on a Horn single Ellsworth followed with an RBI single as well to push the lead to 6-0.
The Bullets added six runs in the fourth. Hesser walked and Wesden Van Ede reached on an error to begin the inning. Nelson then hit both runners home with a double. Camden Reicks would then walk and he and Nelson would score on an Adelman single to make it 10-0. The final run of the inning for the Bullets came on a bases-loaded walk.
Huron scored its two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The first came on an RBI single and the second was on an error to make it 11-2.
Brookings scored one more run in the sixth. Ellsworth hit a one-out single and then stole second. He then scored on a Van Ede single to make the final 12-2.
The Bullets had 14 hits. Hesser was 1-for-2 with four RBIs and Nelson was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Adelman was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Ellsworth was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Horn was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Van Ede was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Jaacks and Helmbolt were each 2-for-4.
Adelman got the start for the Bullets and pitched the first three innings. He gave up two runs, one earned, on one hit with two strikeouts and four walks. Hesser pitched the final three innings and gave up no runs and four hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
Game 2: Huron 14, Brookings 4 (5 inn.)
Huron scored seven runs in the fourth inning and pulled away from Brookings in game two.
The Bullets trailed 2-1 after the first inning. Walks from Helmbolt, Ellsworth and Hesser loaded the bases with one out. Then another walk from Van Ede sent a run home.
Huron tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning and then took the lead on an error to make it 2-1.
Huron extended the lead with two runs in the second. Each run came on a single with two outs to push the lead to 4-1.
The Bullets scored a run in the top of the third. Ellsworth led off with the inning and then scored on a double from Hesser to make it 4-2.
Huron made it 6-2 in the bottom of the third. They scored on an RBI single and then a run from an error made it a four-run game.
Thats when Huron put the game away. They scored a run on an error and then a two-run single made it 9-2. Another RBI single and a run from a ground out made it 11-2 and the final two runs of the inning came on an error.
The Bullets scored two runs in the top of the fifth. Ellsworth walked and scored on a Hesser double. Hesser then came home on a Van Ede single to make it 13-4.
Huron ended the game in the bottom of the inning. They led off with a single and that runner advanced to third on a double and then came home on a single and the game ended due to the 10-run rule.
Brookings had five hits in the loss. Hesser was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Van Ede was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Helmbolt was 1-for-2 and Jaacks was 1-for-3.
Van Ede pitched three innings and gave up six runs, four earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Jaacks pitched one inning and gave up seven unearned runs on three hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Helmbolt pitched a third of an inning and gave up an earned run and one hit with no strikeouts or walks.
