Irene Dorothy Koch passed away June 6, 2025, in Flandreau, SD.
A funeral service will be held for Irene 11 a.m. Monday June 16, at United Parish of Elkton with a visitation prior from 10 to 11 a.m.
Irene was born March 26, 1929, near Alvord, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Elsie (Koch) Bosler. She grew up on a farm near Alvord, and attended country school through the seventh grade. After that she stayed home to help her mother with daily chores.
Irene married Donald Roy Koch Aug. 12, 1960, at Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church in Elkton, SD. They made their home on the family farm near Elkton where they raised their three children Ilene, Joel, and Koni.
In her early years, Irene worked for Alvord Produce, before she started working on the farm raising chickens, taking care of bottle calves, and making meals.
Irene had many hobbies including word search books, puzzles, quilt-making (she made a quilt for each of her grandkids), embroidery, crocheting, and gardening. She was an avid Minnesota Twins baseball fan which she enjoyed watching during her free time. She was hard-working, kind, and to the point.
Irene is survived by her children, Ilene Gilbertson, Joel (Leslie) Koch, Koni (Todd) Thompson; her seven grandchildren, Michelle Gilbertson, Sara (Isaiah) Wahl, Thomas (Lexy) Koch, Lisa (Cole) Nicholas, Molly (Tyler) Edler, William (McKenzie) Koch, and Brianna (Jordan) Ackerschott; her 15 great-grandchildren and two on the way; her two sisters, Carol (Delano) Hinsch and Lorraine Gacke; her sister-in-law Mary Ann Bosler, and many other nieces and nephews.
Irene is preceded in death by her husband Donald, her parents Henry and Elsie, her three brothers Henry Jr., Harold, and Loren, her sisters-in-law, Berdyne Bosler and Anita Bosler, brother-in-law Cletus Gacke, and sons-in-law Dave Thompson, and Lee Gilbertson.
