Banners honoring US military veterans to once again grace Brookings

BROOKINGS The Brookings Area Chamber of Commerces Military Affairs Committee has announced the return of the Military Affairs Banner Program for its fourth consecutive year, honoring the brave men and women of the Brookings area who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. armed forces.

Through this community initiative, personalized banners featuring local veterans and active-duty service members will be displayed, serving as a visual tribute to the sacrifices and service of our military heroes.

The banners will be proudly hung along Sixth Street between Labor Day and Veterans Day. The installation will once again be donated and carried out by Ranier Westall, owner of Westall Electric.

This program has grown into more than just a project its become a mission, says Russ Chavez, director of SDSU Veterans Affairs and chair of the Military Affairs Committee. Im not sure we can give our community veterans enough credit, publicity, or thanks. They not only give of themselves, but of their families as well. These banners put a face on the heroes who have given so much more than just their time some have given all for the freedoms that we all enjoy. Our Military Affairs Committee has not just taken this on as a project, but a mission. A mission to allow the community to see who has served. This mission is long overdue, and we are proud to have made it happen.

The program is open to the public, and community members are encouraged to sponsor a banner in honor of a loved one who has served. Each banner includes a photo, name, rank, and branch of service. Past years have collectively seen over 80 banners displayed throughout Brookings, creating a powerful visual reminder of the sacrifices made by our military families.

Banner orders will be accepted until July 31, and space is limited. Early registration is encouraged. For more information about the program or to sponsor a banner, visit brookingschamber.org/banners or email [email protected].
