Sioux Valley loses final two games of state tournament

ABERDEEN The Sioux Valley Cossacks lost their final two games of the season in the Class A State Softball Tournament over the weekend.

No. 5 seeded Sioux Valley lost 10-0 to No. 8 seeded Vermillion 10-0 on Friday and then fell to No. 7 seeded Elk Point-Jefferson 9-6 on Saturday.

The Cossacks finished the season with a record of 16-8. This was their second season of sanctioned softball and the first State Tournament that they played in. Sioux Valley graduates two players in Savana Guthmiller and Ella Jacobsen.

Friday

Vermillion 10, Sioux Valley 0 (5 inn.)

The Tanagers led 4-0 after the first four innings and then scored six runs in the top of the fifth to end the game due to the 10-run rule.

Neither team scored in the first inning. Vermillion then scored two runs in both the second and third. Maliyah Johnson hit an RBI triple in the second and two batters later Izzy Richardson hit an RBI single to make it 2-0. Mya Halverson then hit an RBI double in the third. Chloe Bottolfson ran for Halverson and then scored on a fielders choice to make it 4-0.

Quinn Christensen reached on an error with one out in the fifth and later scored on a Johnson single. Richardson hit Johnson home with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0. Dylyn Wagner and Kristen Moser then each hit RBI singles to make it 8-0. Madigan Wallin then followed with a two-run single to push the lead to 10-0.

The Cossacks got two runners on in the bottom of the fifth but were unable to score and the game ended.

Sioux Valley had three hits. McKinley Schwab, Guthmiller and Jacobsen were all 1-for-2.

Abby Axtell pitched the first two innings for the Cossacks. She gave up two earned runs on four hits with no strikeouts or walks. Schwab pitched the final three innings and gave up eight runs, two earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Saturday

Elk Point-Jefferson 9, Sioux Valley 6

EPJ scored all nine of its runs in the first two innings and then held off the Cossacks the rest of the way.

The Huskies scored three runs in the top of the first. Molly Geary hit an RBI double and two batters later scored on a Paige Jacobs triple. Jacobs then came home on a Bailey Johnson ground out to make it 3-0.

The Cossacks got one run back in the bottom of the first. Kassidy Smith led off with a walk and then stole second. She then scored on a Zoe Hemmestad single to make it 3-1.

EPJ scored six runs in the top of the second. Geary hit an RBI single and Cera Schmitz followed with a two-run triple. Jacobs and Johnson then each hit RBI singles to make it 9-1.

Sioux Valley scored a run in the bottom of the third. Hemmestad hit a lead-off single and advanced to third on an error. She then scored on a Amelia Jacobson single to make it 9-2.

The Cossacks struck for four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Smith led off with a single and Hemmestad followed and reached on an error. Smith would score on a single from Schwab and Hemmstad came home on a single from Jacobson. Schwab then scored on a sacrifice fly from Guthmiller and Jacobson scored on Jacobsen ground out to make it 9-6.

Sioux Valley had one base runner the next two innings and was unable to cut more into the EPJ lead.

The Cossacks had nine hits in the loss. Jacobson was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and Hemmestad was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Schwab was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Jacobsen was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Smith was 1-for-3.

Schwab pitched the first two innings. She gave up nine runs, eight earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Axtell pitched the next five innings and gave up no runs and four hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
