BROOKINGS Get ready to look up the Brookings Optimist Club Kite Festival is soaring back into town this weekend, promising two days of high-flying fun for all ages.
Set for Fishback Soccer Park on June 14-15, the festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day and will feature a vibrant sky full of kites, from intricate stunt kites to giant inflatables. There will be a night flight of lit kites on Saturday night beginning at dark. This free event draws visitors from across the region and celebrates creativity, family fun, and community spirit.
Now in its 26th year, the festival continues to grow, thanks to the hard work of local volunteers and strong community support. This is about more than just kites, said Optimist Club member and event organizer Sally Norby. Its about bringing the best out in youth, in ourselves and in our community. The experience lifts our optimism all a little higher.
Highlights include 13 professional kite-flying exhibitions from nine states, food trucks, and local vendors. Spectators are encouraged to bring their own kites to join the fun.
The Brookings Optimist Club, which focuses on supporting youth and community programs throughout Brookings County, hosts the event with the assistance of First Bank and Trust, NorthWestern Energy, The Langs, City of Brookings Park and Recreation Department,
Parking will be available on-site, and attendees should bring lawn chairs, blankets, and plenty of sunscreen.
This is one of those rare events that is intergenerational, Norby added. Whether youre flying a kite or just watching the magic in the sky, theres joy in every moment.
