ARLINGTON, Minn. The Brookings Cubs went 1-2 in a tournament over the weekend in Arlington, Minn.
The Cubs lost to Eagle Lake 11-6 on Saturday but then beat Shoreview 5-3 later in the day. In the final game of the tournament Brookings lost 11-1 to Prior Lake on Sunday.
Brookings is now 6-2 and plays at Elkton at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Saturday
Eagle Lake 11, Brookings 6
The Cubs struggled to keep the Expos off the scoreboard in their first game of the tournament and they struggled to fully get their offense going as well.
Eagle Lake scored one run in the top of the first. Liam Peterson and Cael Willaert hit back-to-back singles with one out. Peterson then scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.
Brookings responded with three runs in the bottom of the second. Parker Winghart led off the inning with a single and Johnny Checheris followed with a walk. Winghart would score on a sacrifice fly from Lincoln Vasgaard and then Justin Cofell followed with a single. Checheris then came home on a Nolan Miles ground out and then Logan Anderson hit an RBI double to make it 3-1.
Eagle Lake regained the lead with four runs in the top of the third. Willaert hit an RBI single and then L Metcalf was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game. Willaert then scored on a wild pitch and Jack Clifford scored on a Zach Benson ground out to make it 5-3.
The Expos added another run on a fielders choice in the top of the fourth.
The Cubs then cut the lead to 6-5 in the bottom of the fifth. Henry Hammrich hit a single to begin the inning and advanced to second on an error. He would then steal third and score on a Winghart sacrifice fly. Rhett Zelinsky walked with one out and scored on a Checheris double to make it a one-run game.
Eagle Lake scored four runs in the top of the sixth. Clifford hit a two-run single and then two runs scored on an error to make it 10-5.
The Expos final run of the game came on a Clifford sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Brookings had six hits. Winghart was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Checheris and Anderson were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Cofell and Isaac Bonner were each 1-for-3 and Hammrich was 1-for-4.
Vasgaard pitched the first five innings for the Cubs. He gave up six runs, five earned, on four hits with seven strikeouts and five walks. Bonner pitched the final two innings and gave up five runs, two earned, on three hits with one strikeout and two walks.
Brookings 5, Shoreview 3
The Cubs scored three runs in the top of the ninth to break a 2-2 tie and then held off the Stumpgrinders in the bottom of the inning to earn the win.
Shoreview led 1-0 after the first inning. The Stumpgrinders had three-straight batters walk to begin the bottom of the inning. Evan Benetti then scored on a Ben Spores ground out to make it 1-0.
Brookings tied the game in the top of the second. Zelinsky led off with a triple and then scored on a Checheris single to make it 1-1.
The Stumpgrinders regained the lead in the bottom of the third. Two walks and an error loaded the bases again with no outs. B Spores was then walked with the bases loaded to make it 2-1.
The Cubs evened things up again in the seventh. Vasgaard hit a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Miles. He then made his way to third on an Anderson single and scored on a Hammrich sacrifice fly to make it 2-2.
Vasgaard was hit by a pitch to start the top of the ninth. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Miles and moved to third on an Anderson ground out. Hammrich then hit Vasgaard home to give the Cubs the lead. Bonner then hit Hammrich home with a triple and Hammrich scored on a Winghart ground out to make it 5-2.
Blake Tritch hit a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth and eventually scored on a Jayden King single. Chad Wakabayashi then came to the plate with two runners on and two outs and he grounded out to first to end the game.
The Cubs had 10 hits in the win. Hammrich was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Bonner was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Checheris was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Miles was 1-for-2. Vasgaard and Zelinsky were each 1-for-3 and Cofell was 1-for-4.
Hammrich pitched the first eight innings. He gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits with 10 strikeouts and 11 walks. Anderson got the final three outs and gave up one earned run on two hits with one strikeout.
Sunday
Prior Lake 11, Brookings 1 (6 inn.)
The Cubs had just three hits and also had four errors which helped the Jays come away with a 10-run win in six innings.
Brookings lone run of the game came in the first inning. Hammrich singled to lead off the bottom of the inning. He advanced to second on a Bonner ground out and then scored on a Zelinsky single.
The Jays tied things up in the top of the second. Linus Fleek walked to start the inning and Adam Evenson ran for him. Evenson would later score on a wild pitch to make it 1-1.
Prior Lake scored another run in the third. Jackson Golberg led off the inning with a single and later scored on an error to make it 2-1.
The Jays extended the lead to 8-1 in the fifth. Ben Snider hit an RBI single and then a two-run double from David Flasher made it 5-1. B Baur scored on a wild pitch and Joe Stelzig hit an RBI single. Stelzig then scored on an error to make it a seven-run game.
Prior Lake ended the game in the sixth with three more runs. Fleek hit a two-run double and Flasher hit an RBI single. Brookings went down one-two-three in the bottom of the inning and the game ended due to the 10-run rule.
Zelinsky was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Miles and Hammrich were each 1-for-3.
Tucker Wookey pitched all six innings for the Cubs. He gave up 11 runs, nine earned, on 11 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
