Brookings looking to hire deputy police chief

BROOKINGS The city is casting a wide net in search of a full-time deputy police chief for the Brookings Police Department.

Chief Michael Drake characterized the position as a new one with completely different tasks from the old assistant chief position, which was eliminated in July 2022 per city documents.

They will be responsible for overseeing a wide range of operations and all three divisions within the department, such as criminal investigations, patrol, and administration, Drake told the Brookings Register.

Whoever earns the title of deputy police chief will receive annual compensation ranging from nearly $104,000 up to a bit more than $140,000, depending on qualifications and experience.

Drake hopes to have the position filled by August or September. He pointed out that, We are not changing the number of full-time employees, just (repurposing) an old position into this new one.

The citys 2025 budget process, completed in the fall, accounted for the change, so it wont result in any increased costs, Drake added.

In closing, he further detailed some of the expectations for the position:

Leadership role: The deputy chief will have a broader scope of responsibility and will oversee multiple projects, units and plans.

Specialization: The deputy chief will be assigned to the overall success of specific areas like professional standards, strategic planning, accreditation, budget, auditing and self-assessment, policy and procedure, research and technology, human resources, emergency management, fleet oversight and community relations.

The application period for the deputy police chief position closes on June 23, according to information from the city.
