BROOKINGS The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team was swept in a doubleheader with Watertown on Friday night at Bob Shelden Field.
The Bombers lost game one 7-6 and then fell 11-0 in four innings and game two. Brookings is now 1-6 and will host a doubleheader with Harrisburg Gold on Monday at 5 p.m.
Game 1: Watertown 7, Brookings 6
Brookings was down 7-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth and was unable to come all the way back.
The Bombers led 2-1 after the first inning. Watertown scored a run on a ground out to take the lead in the top of the inning. Brookings then scored a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. John Romsa was walked and then scored on a wild pitch as well to make it 2-1.
The Arrows struck for three runs in the top of the third. They scored runs on a fielders choice, a ground out and a double to make it 4-2.
Brookings would tie the game in the bottom of the inning. The Bombers led off with a single and then scored a run on a ground out. Romsa walked again and then scored on a Mason Hegerfeld to make it 4-4.
Watertown scored three runs in the top of the fifth. The first run came on a single and then two runs came home on a double to make it 7-4.
Hegerfeld reached on an error with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Weston Diers then hit a double and both runners came home on a single from Bennett Porter to make it 7-6 heading into the sixth.
Brookings had one more chance to either tie or win the game in the bottom of the sixth. Jax Sonnenberg led off with a single but the next three batters went down one-two-three and the Bombers suffered the loss.
Porter was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Hegerfeld was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Diers was 2-for-2 and Sonnenberg was 2-for-3.
Porter pitched the first five innings. He gave up seven runs, two earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Sonnenberg pitched the final inning and gave up one hit and had one strikeout and one walk.
Game 2: Watertown 11, Brookings 0 (4 inn.)
The Bombers had just one hit in game two. Nine runs from the Arrows in the fourth ended the game due to the 10-run rule.
Watertown scored one run in each of the first two innings. The Arrows scored on a steal of home in the first inning and then a run from a wild pitch in the second made it 2-0.
The first run of the fourth for Arrows came on an RBI double. Another RBI double made it 4-0 and then back-to-back RBI singles pushed the lead to 6-0. A two-run single and a two-run double made it 10-0. The final run of the inning came on an RBI single.
Brookings went down one-two-three in the bottom of the inning and the game ended.
Romsa had the only hit for the Bombers. He also pitched a complete game for Brookings and gave up 11 runs, 10 earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
