Bombers Black goes 2-1 in Van Jark Tournament

WATERTOWN The Brookings Bombers Black 14U team went 2-1 in the Van Jark Tournament in Watertown over the weekend.

The Bombers lost 9-8 to Aberdeens 14U team on Saturday. They then bounced back with an 11-7 win over Bismarck later on Saturday and then beat Aberdeens 13U team 16-1 in the final game of the tournament on Sunday.

Brookings is now 5-4 and plays a doubleheader at Pierre on Tuesday starting at 4 p.m.

Saturday

Aberdeen 9, Brookings 8

The Smittys scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to come back and earn the victory over the Bombers.

Aberdeen led 1-0 after the first inning after scoring a run on a single.

Brookings tied the game in the top of the third. Mason Burghardt reached on an error with two outs and then advanced to second on a Dario McSweeney walk. Burghardt moved to third on a passed ball and went all the way to home on the play to make it 1-1.

The Bombers scored six runs in the top of the fourth. Cooper Drawdy walked to lead off the inning and then Hayden Jones followed with a single. Drawdy scored on a Ty Johnson single and two batters later Ty Delbridge hit a two-run double to make it 4-1. Delbridge came home on an error and then Drawdy hit a two-run single to push the lead to 7-1.

Aberdeen scored a run on a single on the bottom of the fourth. Brookings got that run back in the top of the fifth. Jones Huntimer hit a one-out triple and then scored on a Delbridge single to make it 8-2.

Aberdeen cut into the lead with a run on a single in the bottom of the fifth. Then a two-run double and a run on a wild pitch in the sixth made it 8-6. Two more runs on an error tied the game and then a run from a ground out made it 9-8.

Brookings went down one-two-three in the top of the seventh.

Delbridge was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Drawdy went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Johnson was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Huntimer was 2-for-4. Jones was 1-for-4.

Mason Burzlaff pitched the first five innings for the Bombers. He gave up six earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Delbridge got the final three outs and gave up three unearned runs and no hits with no strikeouts and three walks.

Brookings 11, Bismarck 7

Brookings scored seven first inning runs and never looked back in the second game of the tournament.

Bismarck scored a run on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the first. McSweeney led off the bottom of the inning with a single and then scored on a Burzlaff single. Drawdy then hit Burzlaff home with a triple to make it 2-1. Drawdy would score on a wild pitch and Delbridge hit an RBI triple to make it 4-1. Delbridge scored on an error and then a two-run triple Grayson Wagner made it 7-1.

Bismarck scored three runs in the top of the second. They scored a run on an error and then a runner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Then a sacrifice fly made it 7-4.

The Bombers scored two runs in the bottom of the inning. Burzlaff led off with a single and then scored on a Drawdy triple. Drawdy then came home on a Huntimer sacrifice fly to make it 9-4.

Bismarck would cut the lead to 9-7 in the top of the fourth. They scored a run on a batter being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then an RBI single made it a two-run game.

Brookings got those two runs back in the bottom of the sixth. Burzlaff reached on an error to lead off the inning and then scored on a Drawdy single. Drawdy would later score on a Delbridge single to make it 11-7 and that would be the final.

Brookings had 11 hits in the win. Drawdy was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Delbridge was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Burzlaff was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Wagner was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Carter Nielsen was 1-for-3 and McSweeney was 1-for-4. Huntimer had an RBI without a hit.

Wagner pitched the first inning and gave up four runs, three earned, on two hits with one strikeout and four walks. Johnson pitched the next two and two thirds innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. McSweeney pitched the final three and a third innings and gave up no runs and no hits and had two strikeouts and one walk.

Sunday

Brookings 16, Aberdeen 1 (4 inn.)

Brookings led 4-0 after the first two innings and then outscored the Smittys 12-1 in the next two innings to end the game due to 15-run rule.

The Bombers scored four in the bottom of the first. McSweeney led off with a walk and then scored on a Burzlaff single. Jones then hit a two-run triple and Huntimer hit him home with a sacrifice fly.

Brookings scored seven runs in the top of the third. Burzlaff and Drawdy walked to lead off the inning and then Jones reached on an error to load the bases up with no outs. Burzlaff came home on a wild pitch and Drawdy scored on a Huntimer sacrifice fly to make it 6-0. Delbridge hit an RBI double and then scored on an error. Johnson came home on a wild pitch and Wagner hit a two-run single to push the lead to 11-0.

The Smittys lone run came on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fourth.

The Bombers then pushed five more runs home in the bottom of the fourth. Jones led off with a single and scored on a Huntimer triple. Huntimer then came home on a ground out to make it 13-1. Johnson scored on a wild pitch and Wagner hit an RBI double. An RBI single from Brady Nutter ended the game.

Brookings had 13 hits. Huntimer was 1-for-1 with three RBIS and Wagner was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Delbridge was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Nutter was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Johnson was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Burzlaff was 1-for-1 with an RBI. Burghardt was 1-for-3.

Drawdy pitched a complete game. He gave up one earned run on two hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.
