BROOKINGS COUNTY A controlled burn on Wednesday afternoon slipped out of control northwest of Elkton and caused an estimated $7,000 in damage to approximately 200 bales.
In a Thursday news release, Brookings County Assistant Sheriff David Biteler wrote the incident occurred near a residence on 483rd Avenue near 216th Street. No injuries were reported.
Shortly after the controlled burn was lit, the resident noticed that some round bales near that location had caught on fire, he wrote. The resident used farm equipment to try and move the bales, but the fire was too large to contain.
It took an hour and a half to contain the blaze. In addition to the sheriffs office, other responding agencies were Elkton Fire/Ambulance and the Aurora Fire Department.
