Brookings Wildlife Federation to hear Alaska adventure story

BROOKINGS The Brookings Wildlife Federation will host Ven Lengkeek, who will talk about his Alaska sight-seeing, hunting and fishing adventure at the Federations monthly infolunch on June 6.

The event will be at noon in the Brookings County Outdoor Adventure Center, 2810 22nd Ave. S.

A lite buffet lunch will be available for a free-will donation.

He will show slides and talk about several Alaska trips that included fly fishing for rainbow trout and dolly varden on the Kenai River, doing a self-guided caribou hunt west of Soldotna, fishing for halibut, salmon, and cod out of Seward, and cruising the inside passage.

Lengkeek says that he has always considered Alaska as the last frontier, and the 49th state was his travel dream. He said, In many ways, it still can be considered the last frontier, and it is indeed a long way away; getting to Alaska is a big part of the trip driving, flying or taking a boat.whatever means you choose is part of the adventure. No matter how many times one goes to Alaska, there is always something new to see and do.

He received his degrees from South Dakota State University a bachelor of science in wildlife biology, a master of science in soil microbiology and a PhD in plant science.

After spending years working in various states, Ven and his wife Deb moved back to South Dakota in 2019. They are both involved with SDSU and enjoy many of the activities and functions the university has to offer.

Before the Alaska talk, the federation will present District 7 Legislator Roger DeGroot with the South Dakota Wildlife Federations Legislator of the Year Award. DeGroot was especially helpful to the state federation with wildlife bills in the last Legislature.
