Brookings Bandits sweep low-scoring doubleheader with Aberdeen

BROOKINGS The Brookings Bandits won a pair of low-scoring games against the Aberdeen Smittys in a legion baseball doubleheader on Thursday night at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings won game one 2-1 and then the Bandits took game two 4-3. The Bandits are now 4-3 and will play a doubleheader against Renner in Brookings on Tuesday starting at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Brookings 2, Aberdeen 1

The Bandits scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and then held off the Smittys in the top of the seventh to earn the victory in game one.

The Smittys broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the fourth. Jared Klootwyk was hit by a pitch with one out and then advanced to second on a passed ball. He then scored on a Riley Waldo single to make it 1-0.

Cooper Schneider hit a two-out single in the sixth. He then stole second and came around to score on a Jase Bauer single and that tied the game. Bauer would steal second and Tane Friedrich was hit by a pitch. Tyson Antonen was then walked to load the bases. Maxten Jensen then came to the plate and hit a ground ball to Waldo but he made an error and Bauer scored to give the Bandits a 2-1 lead.

Jehiel Aviles and Lance Siefken hit back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the seventh. Each runner stole a base to put runners on second and third but Kysin Reuer forced Joran Foss into a fly out to center field to end the game.

Reuer pitched a complete game for Brookings. He gave up one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

Brookings had three hits. Bauer was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Schneider was 1-for-2 and Tre Christopherson was 1-for-3.

Game 2: Brookings 4, Aberdeen 3

The second game was only five innings long due to weather. Schneider hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to score the game-winning run.

The Smittys jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Aviles led off the game with a single and advanced to second on an error. He then scored on a single from Siefken to make it 1-0. Siefken then advanced to second on a ground out and would then score on a Joe Cogley triple to give Aberdeen a two-run lead.

Brookings immediately tied the game up in the bottom of the inning. Schneider walked with one out and Bauer followed with a single that sent Schneider to third. Schneider then scored on a sacrifice fly from Friedrich and Bauer later stole home to make it a 2-2 game.

The Bandits gained the lead in the bottom of the second. Nolan Krogman hit a one-out single and then stole second. He made his way to third on a ground out from Jude Meendering and scored on a passed ball to make it 3-2.

The Smittys evened things up in the top of the fifth. Levi Hoffman hit a lead-off single and made it to second on a sacrifice bunt from Aviles. He then scored on a single from Siefken.

Christopherson hit a one-out single in the bottom of the inning and stole second. He then scored the game-winning run on the Schneider single.

Brookings had five hits in the win. Friedrich was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Schneider was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Krogman and Christopherson were each 1-for-2 and Bauer was 1-for-3.

Krogman pitched a complete game for the Bandits. He gave up three earned runs on seven hits and had six strikeouts and one walk.
