BROOKINGS Sioux Falls East pulled away from the Brookings Bandits in a Legion baseball game on Wednesday night at Bob Shelden Field.
The Bandits led 2-1 after the first inning, but SF East outscored them 14-2 in the next five innings and won via the 10-run rule in six innings.
SF East scored one run in the top of the first. Brody Schafer walked to begin the game and advanced to second on a single from Jens McLarty. He then made his way to third on a double play before scoring on a triple from Dietrich Haan.
Tre Christopherson was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the inning. He immediately scored as Cooper Schneider hit a triple to center field to make it 1-1. Jase Bauer then hit Schneider home with a sacrifice fly to give the Bandits the lead.
Neither team scored in the second and SF East scored six runs in the top of the third. Schafer was walked, McLarty reached on an error and Colin Lunders was hit by a pitch to load the bases up with one out. Hann then hit a two-run double and Ethan Olson followed with an RBI triple to make it 5-2. Olson then scored on an error and Jude Timat hit an RBI single to make it 7-2.
Brookings scored two runs in the bottom of the second. Schneider was hit by a pitch to lead off the half inning and would make his way to third during the next at bat. He then scored on an error to make it 7-3. Tane Friedrich then hit an RBI double to cut the lead to 7-4.
That would be the final run of the game for the Bandits. SF East would then score four more runs in the top of the fourth. Schafer led off the inning with a single and then scored on a Lunders double. Lunders came home on a Haan single to make it 9-4. Haan scored on an error later in the inning and Caden Sporrer hit an RBI single to push the lead to 11-4.
Two more runs in the fifth made it 13-4. Alowishis Nelson singled with one out and then stole second. He scored on a Schafer single. Two batters later Schafer was hit home by a Lunders single and it was a nine-run game heading into the sixth.
SF East put itself in a position to win the game in the sixth. Timat and Nelson hit back-to-back one-out singles. They then both scored on an error to make it 15-4.
Brookings would go down one-two-three in the bottom of the sixth and the game ended.
The Bandits had five hits in the loss. Schneider was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Friedrich was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Tyson Antonen and Maxten Jensen were each 1-for-2. Bauer had two RBIs without a hit.
Antonen got the start for the Bandits and pitched four innings. He gave up 11 runs, eight earned, on nine hits with one strikeout and three walks. Christopherson pitched two thirds of an inning and gave up two earned runs on three hits with no strikeouts or walks. Ryder Anderson pitched an inning and a third and gave up two unearned runs on three hits with one strikeout and no walks.
Brookings is now 2-3. The Bandits will play a doubleheader against Aberdeen on Thursday night starting at 5 p.m.
