Brookings Chutes sweep season-opening doubleheader in Aberdeen

ABERDEEN The Brookings Chutes opened up the junior legion season with a doubleheader sweep of the Aberdeen Smittys on Saturday.

Brookings shut out the Smittys in game one and then came away with a 7-4 win in game two.The Chutes will play a doubleheader at Marshall on Tuesday starting at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Brookings 6, Aberdeen 0

Nolan Krogman and Jude Meendering combined to pitch a shutout in game one. Korgman pitched the first five and a third innings and gave up three hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Meendering gave up no hits and had three strikeouts and two walks.

Brookings broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the second. Dixon Dauer led off the inning with a double and then Andrew Heinz and Parker Witte each walked to load the bases up with two outs. Krogman then walked to score a run and make it 1-0.

The Chutes extended the lead to 4-0 in the top of the third. Noah Lease and Ben Schulte hit back-to-back singles to lead off the third. Both runners then scored on a Dauer single. Dauer would then steal home to push the lead to four.

Brookings scored two insurance runs in the top of the sixth. Heinze was hit by a pitch and Witte walked to put two runners on with no outs. Krogman then hit Heinze home with a single and Witte scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0. Neither team scored the rest of the way.

The Chutes had seven hits in the win. Dauer was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Krogman was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Heinze was 1-for-1 and Lease was 1-for-3. Schulte and Meendering were each 1-for-4.

Game 2: Brookings 7, Aberdeen 4

The Chutes jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings and didnt look back in game two.

Brooking scored two runs in each of the first two innings. Lease and Dauer each hit two-out singles in the top of the first and Schulte followed with a walk to load the bases up. Dauer and Lease then each scored on a Heinze single to make it 2-0.

Witte hit a one-out single in the second but was then thrown out at second on a Krogman fielders choice. Krogman would then steal second and third and score on a Meendering single. Meendering stole second and scored on a Lease single to make it 4-0.

Brookings added another run in the top of the fourth. Tate Sonnenburg hit a double to lead off the inning and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.

Aberdeen got on the board with a run from a ground out in the bottom of the fourth. Brookings got that run back in the top of the fifth with an RBI double from Dauer.

The Smittys scored a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of sixth but Brookings made it a five-run game again in the top of the seventh. Lease led off with a single. He stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a Schulte ground out.

Aberdeen scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh but that was not enough. The first run came from an error and the final run came from an RBI single to make the final 7-4.

Brookings had 11 hits. Heinze was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Lease was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Dauer was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Schulte and Meendering were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sonnenburg was 2-for-3 and Witte was 1-for-3.

Lease pitched the first five innings and gave up one earned run on three hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Heinze pitched the final two innings and gave up three runs, one earned, on two hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
