The Brookings Bullets 16U team split two doubleheaders over the weekend.
The Bullets played Renner on Friday night at Bob Shelden Field and won the first game before falling in the second one. They then took on Aberdeen on the road on Sunday and lost the first game and bounced back with a win in the second game.
Brookings is now 3-3 and will host a doubleheader against Marshall on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Friday
Game 1: Brookings 9, Renner 8
BROOKINGS Brookings scored three runs in the final inning to rally and earn the victory in game one on Friday night.
Lincoln Helmbolt walked to begin the bottom of the seventh and Grant Horn and Jace Jaacks followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases up with no outs. Rylan Hesser then popped out to the shortstop but Wesden Van Ede came through with a two-run single to tie the game at 8-8. Eli Ellsworth then bunted and Jaacks made his way home to score the game-winning run.
Renner scored three runs in the top of the first. The Monarchs first run of the game came on an RBI single. They then pushed across runs on a wild pitch and a ground out to make it 3-0.
Brookings responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Helmbolt, Horn and Jaacks all walked to begin the inning. Helmbolt and Horn each scored on a wild pitch and Jaacks scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Van Ede scored on a wild pitch Mack Nelson scored on a passed ball to make it 5-3 heading into the second inning.
Renner regained the lead in the top of the third with four runs. The Monarchs scored runs on a dropped third strike and an error to tie the game. A two-run single then put Renner up 7-5. The Monarchs scored another run on an RBI single in the top of the fifth to make it 8-5.
Brookings got that run back in the bottom of the inning. Jaacks led off the inning with a triple and then scored on a Hesser single to make it 8-6. That allowed the Bullets to come back in the seventh and win the game.
Brookings had six hits in the win. Van Ede and Ellsworth were each 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Hesser was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Jaacks was 2-for-3 and Horn was 1-for-3.
Jaacks got the start on the mound for Brookings and pitched four and a third innings. He gave up eight runs, four earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and five walks. Hesser pitched the final two and two thirds innings and gave up no runs or hits and had one strikeout and two walks.
Game 2: Renner 15, Brookings 4
The Monarchs scored eight runs in the final inning to pull away from Brookings in game two.
Renner led 3-0 after the first two innings. The Monarchs first two runs were scored on an error. They then scored a run on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
The Bullets got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third. Jonas Murray and Brennan Cordes each walked to begin the inning and then Helmbolt hit a single to load the bases up. Jaacks then hit Murray home with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 3-1.
Brookings would pull within two in the bottom of the fifth. Murray reached on a dropped third strike to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a passed ball. He made his way home on a Horn single to make it 3-2.
Renner would push its lead to 7-2 in the sixth. The first run of the inning came on a passed ball and then the Monarchs scored on a fielders choice to make it 5-2. Another run on a wild pitch and a run from a sacrifice fly made it 7-2 heading into the final inning.
Runs from a bases-loaded walk and a passed ball made it 9-2. Then a sacrifice fly and two more bases-loaded walks pushed the lead to 12-2. Another run on a wild pitch and a two-run single would make it 15-2 heading into the final half inning.
Brookings scored two runs in the final half inning to make the final 15-4. Aiden Adelman hit a single with one out and then Jaacks walked and Camden Reicks reached on an error to load the bases up. Van Ede would then hit a two-run single.
The Bullets had six hits in the loss. Van Ede was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Horn was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Adelman was 1-for-1 and Helmbolt was 1-for-3. Jaacks had an RBI without a hit.
Sunday
Game 1: Aberdeen 13, Brookings 8
ABERDEEN Aberdeen scored in every inning in game one on Sunday.
The Smittys led 1-0 after the first inning after an RBI single. They then scored five runs in the second. The first two runs came from a single and then a run from an error made it 4-0. Two more runs came home from a wild pitch, making it 6-0 heading into the third.
Brookings scored a run in the top of the third. Horn hit a one-out double and then scored on a Hesser single to make it 6-1.
Aberdeen got that run back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single.
Brookings then scored five runs in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to one. Helmbolt and Horn each hit RBI singles to make it 7-3. A Sacrifice fly from Hesser and a bases-loaded walk from Ellsworth made it 7-5. The final run of the inning came on a wild pitch and Jaacks came home to score.
Aberdeen then extended the lead to 9-6 in the bottom of the fourth. The Smittys scored a run on a ground out and then an RBI single made it a three-run game.
Brookings cut the lead to 9-7 in the top of the fifth. Cordes walked and then stole second and advanced third on a passed ball. He then scored on an error.
Aberdeen made it 12-7 in the bottom of the fifth. Two runs came home on RBI singles and then a run from an error made it a five-run game.
Brookings narrowed the deficit to 12-8 in the top of the sixth. Hesser walked but was then thrown out trying to get to second on anEllsworth fielders choice. Ellsworth then scored on a single to make it 12-8.
An RBI double from the Smittys in the bottom of the sixth made the final 13-8.
The Bullets had seven hits. Hesser was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Horn was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Helmbolt and Reicks were each 1-for-4 with an RBI and Cordes was 1-for-2. Ellsworth had an RBI without a hit.
Game 2: Brookings 12, Aberdeen 3 (5 inn.)
The Bullets bounced back with a dominating win in five innings in game two. Brookings pulled away with 10 runs in the third and fourth innings combined.
Brookings led 2-0 after two innings. Van Ede was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then Nelson was walked and Adelman hit a one-out single to load the bases up. Nelson and Van Ede then both scored on a single to make it 2-0.
The Bullets extended the lead to 6-0 in the third. Hesser hit a one-out single and then scored on a Ellsworth single. Ellsworth and Nelson then scored on a double from Adelman to make it 5-0. The final run of the inning came on a Murray single.
The lead grew to 12-0 in the fourth. Horn, Jaacks and Hesser all walked to load the bases up with no outs. Van Ede hit Jaacks and Horn home with a single. Murray was then walked with the bases loaded and then Ellsworth, Murray and Van Ede all scored on an error to make it 12-0.
Aberdeens three runs came in the final two innings. The Smittys scored on an RBI single and an error in the bottom of the fourth. The final run of the game came on another error in the bottom of the fifth.
Brookings had nine hits in the win. Murray was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and Adelman was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Van Ede was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Ellsworth was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Helmbolt was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Hesser was 1-for-3.
Van Ede pitched a complete game for the Bullets. He gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
