Brookings Bombers Black splits doubleheader in Mitchell

MITCHELL The Brookings Bombers Black 14U team split a doubleheader with Mitchell on Monday night.

Mitchell won game one 19-8 in five innings and then the Bombers bounced back with an 8-3 victory in game two. Brookings is now 3-3 and will play in the Van Jark Tournament in Watertown this weekend.

Game 1: Mitchell 19, Brookings 8

Mitchell scored 11 runs in the third inning and that led to the 11-run victory for them.

Mitchell led 3-0 after the first two innings. They scored runs on an RBI single and a wild pitch in the first inning. Another RBI single in the third made it a three-run game.

Brookings got on the board with a run in the top of the third. Dario McSweeney reached on a single to lead off the inning. He made his way to third on a Cooper Drawdy double and then scored on a Hayden Jones ground out to make it 3-1.

Mitchell loaded the bases up with no outs and then scored runs on a single, a fielders choice and an error. A two-run double and an RBI single pushed the lead to 9-1. Then a two-run single and a two-run double made it 13-1. The final run of the inning for Mitchell was from a fielders choice.

Brookings scored five runs in the top of the fourth. Mason Burghardt and Ty Delbridge each walked with one out. Burghard scored on a double from McSweeney and then Mason Burzlaff hit a two-run double to make it 14-4. Drawdy followed with an RBI double and Jones hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 14-6.

Mitchell got all five of those runs back in the bottom of the inning. They scored a run on a ground out and then a two-run single made it 17-6. Two more RBI singles pushed the lead to 19-6 heading into the fifth.

Brookings scored two runs in the top of the fifth but that was not enough to extend the game as the Bombers lost via the 10-run rule. Jones Huntimer led off the fifth with an inside the park home run. Delbridge walked with one out and made it to second on a Carter Nielsen single. He then scored on a Burzlaff single to make the final 19-8.

The Bombers had 12 hits in the loss. Burzlaff was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Jone was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. McSweeney was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Huntimer was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Drawdy was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Ty Johnson and Nielsen were 1-for-3.

McSweeney got the start for Brookings and pitched two innings. He gave up three earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Delbridge pitched two thirds of an inning and gave up 10 runs, one earned, on six hits with one strikeout and two walks. Johnson pitched the final inning and a third and gave up six runs, five earned, on seven hits and had no strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: Brookings 8, Mitchell 3

There wasnt as much offense in game two but the Bombers were able to pull out the victory.

Neither team scored in the first and then Mitchell held a 2-1 lead after the second. Jones led off the second with a single and then advanced to third on an error. He then came home on a single from Delbridge.

Mitchell led off the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles and then both runners scored on an error later in the inning.

The Bombers took the lead in the top of the third with two runs. Burzlaff walked with two outs and then made his way to third on an error. He would then score on a single from Drawdy and Drawdy would later score on a wild pitch to make it 3-2.

Brookings added another run in the fourth. Delbridge walked with one out and then stole second. He would then come home on an error, making it 4-2 heading into the fifth.

The Bombers extended the lead to 6-2 in the top of the fifth. McSweeney and Burzlaff walked to begin the inning. McSweeney would score on an error and Burzlaff later scored on a sacrifice fly from Huntimer.

Mitchell scored a run on an error in the bottom of the inning.

Brookings added two insurance runs in the seventh. McSweeney led off the inning with a triple and then scored an error. Burzlaff reached on that error and he later scored on a Jones single to make it 8-3 heading into the final inning. Mitchell got three runners on with two outs but then a ground out ended the game.

The Bombers had six hits. Jones was 2-for-3 with one RBI and Drawdy was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Delbridge was 1-for-1 with an RBI and McSweeney was 2-for-3. Burzlaff and Huntimer each had an RBI without a hit.

Drawdy pitched a complete game for the Bombers. He gave up three unearned runs on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
