BALTIC The Brookings Cubs struck early and often on Thursday night and improved to 5-0 with a 15-2 win in seven innings over Baltic on the road.
Brookings led 6-0 after the first three innings. Henry Hammrich was hit by a pitch in the first at bat of the game and then scored on a two-single from Rhett Zelinsky.
The Cubs extended their lead to 4-0 in the third inning. Chase McDaniel hit a lead off double and scored the next at bat as Zelinsky hit a double to left field. Parker Winghart came up two batters later and hit a two-run home run to right field to make it 4-0.
Baltic scored a run in the bottom of the inning on a bases-loaded walk. However, Brookings scored two runs in the top of the fourth. Hammrich was walked with one out and Isaac Bonner crushed one over the right field fence to make it 6-1.
Noah Buss was walked to lead off the top of the fifth. He was thrown out trying to get to second on a Winghart fielders choice. Winghart moved to second on a walk and then came home on a Justin Cofell single to push the lead to 7-1.
Bonner led off the sixth and doubled to center field. He then scored on a McDaniel single to make it 8-1.
Baltic scored its second run in the bottom of the sixth on an error. Brookings then scored seven runs in the seventh.
Myles Rees hit a double to start the inning and scored on an error. Hammrich walked and Bonner singled to load the bases up. McDaniel hit two runners home with a single and then Buss was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 12-2. McDaniel scored on a fielders choice and then Rees hit an RBI single. Winghart came home to extend the lead to 15-2.
Baltic drew a lead-off walk but then had three-straight batters go down to end the game.
Brookings had 15 hits. McDaniel was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Winghart was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Bonner was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Zelinsky was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Cofell and Rees were each 2-for-5 with an RBI. Peters was 1-for-3.
Logan Anderson pitched five innings to start the game. He gave up one earned run on one hit with 13 strikeouts and five walks. Vasgaard pitched the next two innings and gave up one unearned run on one hit with four strikeouts and one walk.
Brookings will have more than a week off and will then play in its only tournament of the season in Arlington, Minn., on June 7-8.
