Brookings Bandits sweep Pierre in first doubleheader of the season

PIERRE The Brookings Bandits began the senior Legion season with a doubleheader sweep of Pierre on Thursday night.

The Bandits won game one 5-2 in extra innings and then dismantled Pierre 21-7 in game two. Brookings will play a doubleheader at Brandon Valley on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Brookings 5, Pierre 3 (9 inn.)

The Bandits scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning and then held off Pierre in the bottom of the inning.

Maxten Jensen led off the ninth with a walk. Tre Christopherson then hit a single with one out and Cooper Schneider walked to load the bases up. Jase Bauer came through with a single that hit Jensen home and then Ryder Anderson was walked to score Christopherson. Antonent then hit Schneider home with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.

Trevor Rounds hit a one-out triple for Pierre and then scored on a Cooper Terwilliger single. Pierre got one more runner on with a walk but then the next two batters popped out and lined out to end the game.

Pierre led 1-0 at the end of the first inning. Sutton Sonnenschein tripled to lead off the bottom of the inning and then scored on a passed ball. They then extended the lead to 2-0 with a run from an error in the bottom of the third.

Brookings would then tie the game in the sixth. Schneider hit a single to begin the inning and then stole second. He came home on an Anderson single and then Anderson was thrown out at second on an Antonen fielders choice. Antonen came home on a Tane Friedrich double to make it 2-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth and that set up extra innings.

Breck Wilson started the game for the Bandits on the mound. He pitched four innings and gave up two unearned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Schneider pitched an inning and a third and gave up no runs and two hits with no strikeouts and two walks. Antonen pitched the final three and two thirds innings and gave up one earned run on three hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Game 2: Brookings 21, Pierre 7 (5 inn.)

Brookings took it to Pierre in game two as the Bandits scored 18 runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings combined. Pierre didnt score until the bottom of the fifth.

The Bandits led 3-0 after two innings. Bauer came to the plate with two outs in the first and hit one over the left field fence to make it 1-0. Antonen and Friedrich led off the second with back-to-back singles. Ryan Lockrem was then walked to load the bases up and then Antonen scored on a passed ball. Schneider then drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-0.

Winston Plummer led off the third with a double and then scored on an Antonen single. Jay Harris then hit an RBI single with the bases loaded to make it 5-0. Harris and Lockrem then each scored on a passed ball to make it 7-0.

Bauer hit a double to lead off the fourth. Plummer followed with a single and then Bauer scored on a passed ball. Lockrem was walked with the bases loaded and Friedrich hit an RBI single. Jensen came home on a fielders choice and then Bauer hit a two-run double to make it 13-0. Plummer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Bauer scored on a wild pitch. Antonen then drove Wilson home to make it 16-0.

The lead grew to 21-0 in the top of the fifth. Harris hit an RBI double after Anderson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Christopherson and Schneider were then walked to load the bases and Bauer walked as well to score a run. Reuer hit Christopherson home with a single and then Antonen was walked. Friderich then hit an RBI double to score Brookings last run of the game.

Pierre finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning as they scored runs. Terwilliger and Ridge Leimbach each hit RBI doubles to make it 21-2. Charlie Simpson then scored on a wild pitch and Parker OBryan hit an RBI single to make it 21-4. Dawson Getz then hit a bases-clearing triple to cut the lead to 21-7. However, the next batter struck out and the game ended due to the 10-run rule.

Brookings had 15 hits in the victory. Bauer was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Antonen was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Harris was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Christopherson was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Friedrich was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Reuer was 1-for-1 with an RBI. Plummer was 2-for-3 and Schneider and Lockrem each had an RBI without a hit.

Reuer pitched the first four and two thirds innings. He gave up six earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and six walks. Lockrem got the final out and gave up one earned run and one hit with one strikeout and one walk.
