BROOKINGS The Brookings Cubs improved to 4-0 in the amateur baseball season on Wednesday night as they beat the Elkton Snappers 9-2 at Bob Shelden Field.
Elkton scored a run in the first inning and the Cubs then outscored the Snappers 9-1 in the final eight innings.
Brady Steffen led off the game with a walk for the Snappers and Dylan Kuehl followed with a single. Each runner advanced on a wild pitch and Steffen then scored on a ground out from Aiden Stewart.
Brookings didnt get on the scoreboard until the bottom of the fourth and the Cubs would take the lead then. Parker Winghart led off the inning with a single and then scored on a Myles Rees double. Lincoln Vasgaard then hit a single to put runners on the corners. Rees came home on a wild pitch and Vasgaard scored on a ground out from Zach Struck to make it 4-1.
Elkton scored one run in the top of the sixth. Stewart hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Charlie Harming. Stewart then made his way to third on a wild pitch and scored on an Eliot Erickson single to cut the lead to 4-2.
Brookings answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Winghart led off with a double and scored on a Rees single. Arlen Peters then hit a double and Struck was hit by a pitch to load the bases up with one out. Rees and Peters came home on a Nolan Miles single. Two batters later Isaac Bonner hit a two-run single to push the lead to 9-2 and neither team scored the rest of the way.
Brookings had 11 hits in the win. Bonner was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and Rees was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Miles was 1-for-2 with two rBIs and Vasgaard and Peters were each 1-for-4. Winghart was 2-for-3 and Colin Gibson was 1-for-5. Struck had an RBI without a hit.
Tucker Wookey got the start for the Cubs. He pitched seven innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Henry Hammrich pitched two innings and gave up no runs and no hits while striking out five of the six batters he faced.
The Cubs will be back in action on Thursday night as theyll play at Baltic at 7:30 p.m.
