Quilting event in Brookings will benefit nation, world

BROOKINGS Tie One On has an energizing meaning to the Brookings First Lutheran Church Quilters as they prepare for the third annual quilting bee on June 7.

It means time to invite all volunteers including men, women, youth middle school and up to enjoy a day of cutting, sewing, ironing, and especially tying the knots that create mission quilts for Lutheran World Relief distribution.

This event takes place in the fellowship hall, lower level, at the church on Eighth Street and Main Avenue from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The group offers a free lunch and coffee breaks to all. Register with Julie Phinney at 507-201-7155 or [email protected] to ensure an accurate count. All skill levels are welcome.

Sewing supplies are provided, and donated fabric or cotton sheets are always appreciated, too. These mission quilts will be sent around the world and domestically, too, wherever people in disaster areas need the warmth and comfort of a blanket. Recipients might live in flooded or earthquake damaged locations, refugee camps, medical aid stations.

Last year this quilting group shipped over 400 quilts during the in-gathering of supplies to the LWR warehouse in St. Paul, Minnesota. The members meet weekly on Tuesday mornings. They welcome workers to join them at any time.
