Dedicated educators, staff are something to be grateful for

I am pleased to provide these comments of praise for the teachers and staff in the Brookings School District.

For the past two years I was able to volunteer one morning weekly in the second- and third-grade classrooms at Hillcrest Elementary School.

I have great respect for every person in that school in making it a safe and inviting environment for our children. The classroom teachers are key, demonstrating patience, compassion, and multi-tasking skills that would be the envy of any other professional. Equally important are the instructors in art, PE, music, technology and the library. Additionally, special support services in reading, the teacher assistants, behavior technicians, and counselors are critical for the diverse needs of todays learners.

The school principal led the way with able assistance from front office staff whose task was to hold all the pieces together. Custodians, cooks, bus drivers, and crossing guards round out the village for this key institution in our community. My brief experiences at Hillcrest were very rewarding. I would encourage any young individual to explore the many opportunities a career in education provides.
