MARSHALL, Minn. The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team dropped both games of their first doubleheader on Friday against Marshall (Minnesota).
Brookings lost the first game 4-1 and then fell 4-0 in the second game. The Bombers will return to the field on June 6 as they host a doubleheader against Watertown.
Game 1: Marshall 4, Brookings 1
Brookings jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning but was unable to score the rest of the game.
Bennett Porter hit a one-out single and then made his way to third on an error. Mason Hegerfeld then hit an RBI single to give the Bombers the lead.
Marshall answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. They led the inning off with a walk and that runner later scored on a single. Marshall had a player reach on an error with one out and he then scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.
Marshall added another run in the second. That run came on an RBI single. They then pushed the lead to 4-1 in the fourth as a run came home on an error.
Brookings had two hits in the game. Hegerfeld was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Porter was 1-for-2.
Porter got the start on the mound for the Bombers and pitched the first two innings. He gave up three runs, one earned, on two hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Cade Jaacks pitched the final three innings and gave up one unearned run on one hit with four strikeouts and two walks.
Game 2: Marshall 4, Brookings 0
Brookings was unable to get its offense going again in game two.
Marshall scored all of its runs in the third inning. The first run of the inning came on a single. The next two came on wild pitches. Then a run on a ground out made it 4-0.
The Bombers had two hits again. Kort H was 1-for-2 and John Romsa was 1-for-3.
Romsa also pitched the first three innings. He gave up four runs, three earned, on two hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Cullen T pitched the last two innings and gave up no runs and one hit with two strikeouts and one walk.
