The Brookings Bombers Black team began the 14U baseball season with two doubleheaders over the weekend and came away with a 2-2 record.
Brookings was swept by Marshall on Friday night, but then bounced back with two wins in Yankton on Monday. The Bombers will have the week off and play a doubleheader at Mitchell on June 2 at 5 p.m.
Friday
Game 1: Marshall 7, Brookings 4
BROOKINGS The Bombers led 3-2 after one inning but were then outscored 5-1 in the final three innings.
Marshall scored its two runs in the first inning from an RBI double and an RBI triple.
Walks from Mason Burzlaff and Hayden Jones and a single from Cooper Drawdy loaded the bases up with one out for Brookings in the bottom of the inning. Burzlaff came home on a Jennings Huntimer walk and then Ty Johnson hit a two-run single to make it 3-2.
Marshall regained the lead in the fourth inning. They hit a two-run single and then added another run on a wild pitch to make it 5-3.
Marshall scored another run on a wild pitch in the fifth. They then pushed the lead to 7-3 in the top of the sixth with an RBI single. Dario McSweeney reached on a dropped third strike to lead off the bottom of the sixth. He then scored on a double from Drawdy but the next three batters went down one-two-three and the game ended.
Brookings had five hits in the loss. Johnson was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Drawdy was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Burzlaff was 2-for-2 and Jennings Huntimer had an RBI without a hit.
Drawdy pitched the first three innings and gave up two earned runs on three hits with three walks and no strikeouts. McSweeney pitched the next two innings and gave up five earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Johnson pitched the final inning and gave up no runs or hits and had one strikeout.
Game 2: Marshall 14, Brookings 5 (5 inn.)
The Bombers had five errors and walked 10 batters in game two. They led 4-1 after two innings but were then outscored 13-1 in the final three innings.
Brookings scored two runs in the first. McSweeney reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the first and then scored on a Drawdy singel. Drawdy then came home on a Jones single to make it 2-0.
Marshall scored a run in the top of the second but the Bombers answered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Mason Burghardt hit a two-out single and Carter Nielsen followed with a walk. Both runners then came home on a single from McSweeney to make it 4-1.
Marshall scored two runs on an error and then a run on a fielders choice to tie the game in the third. They then scored another run on an error and a bases-loaded walk to gain a 6-4 lead. Runs from a wild pitch, an error and a single made it 9-4 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
Brookings got one run back in the bottom of the third. Drawdy hit a lead-off double and then scored on a ground out to make it 9-5.
A two-run triple gave Marshall an 11-5 lead in the fourth. A run from an error and a two-run double made the final 14-5.
The Bombers had five hits again. McSweeney was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Drawdy was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jones was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Monday
Game 1: Brookings 16, Yankton 3 (5 inn.)
YANKTON The Bombers scored 10 runs in the second and that allowed them to win in five innings via the 10-run rule.
Brookings scored one run in the first. McSweeney hit a single and then later scored on a Drawdy single to make it 1-0.
Ty Delbridge hit a single and then a Burghardt walk and Grayson Wagner getting hit by a pitch loaded the bases up with no outs. Brady Nutter was then walked to score a run and Burghardt scored on a wild pitch. Wagner then scored on an error to make it 4-0.
Drawdy came to the plate with the bases loaded and no outs later in the second and hit a bases clearing triple. He later scored on a wild pitch and two more runs scored on a balk and an error to make it 10-0. The final run of the second inning for the Bombers came on an error as Delbridge crossed the plate.
Yankton scored a run on a ground out in the bottom of the second.
Brookings added five more runs in the top of the fourth. Jones and Huntimer hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Jones scored on a Johnson single and then Huntimer came home on a Burghardt single to make it 13-1. Burghardt would then score on an error and Nielsen followed with an RBI single. Nutter would then score on a Burzlaff single to push the lead to 15.
Yankton scored runs on a single and a passed ball to make the final 16-3.
The Bombers racked up 16 hits. Drawdy was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Burghardt and Nielsen were each 1-for-2 with an RBI. Johnson, McSweeney and Burzlaff were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Huntimer and Delbridge were each 1-for-3 and Jones was 1-for-1.
Drawdy pitched three innings and gave up one unearned run and no hits with five strikeouts. Burghardt pitched the final two innings and gave up two unearned runs on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
Game 2: Brookings 13, Yankton 0 (5 inn.)
It was another five-inning win for the Bombers in game two.
Brookings scored one run in the top of the first. McSweeney walked to lead off the game and scored on a wild pitch.
The Bombers then added three runs in the second. Johnson walked to lead off the inning and scored on error. Delbridge and Nielsen walked as well. Delbridge scored on a wild pitch and Nielsen scored on a McSweeney sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
The Bombers stretched the lead to 7-0 in the third. Drawdy and Jones hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Drawdy scored on a wild pitch and Jones came home on a double from Delbridge. Delbridge then scored on an error.
The final six runs of the game for the Bombers came in the fourth. McSweeney hit an RBI single and Drawdy walked to put two runners on with two outs. Both runners scored on a double from Jones to make it 10-0. Johnson hit Jones home with a single and then a two-run triple from Delbridge made the final 13-0.
Delbridge was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Jones was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. McSweeney was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Johsnon was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Drawdy was 2-for-2.
Burzlaff and Wagner combined for the shutout. Burzlaff pitched four innings and gave up one hit and had eight strikeouts and one walk. Wagner got the final three outs and had two strikeouts and one walk.
