BROOKINGS WILL HAVE NEW HOTEL
W.S. DUDLEY BEGINS CONSTRUCTION THIS WEEK ON NEW HOSTELRY
IT WILL HAVE EIGHTY MODERN ROOMS
The Greatest Need of the City Will Be Satisfactorily Filled Before Cold Weather Comes
Instead of the present Leon Hotel, standing at the corner of Third Ave and Williams St (now 4th Street), can you imagine an imposing structure 150 feet in length, three stories high, with a beautiful canopy over the lobby entrance in the center, a high artistic cornice at the top of the wall, and all those other features that bespeak a modern building of the highest type. It is just that sort of edifice which will replace the Leon Hotel. W.S. Dudley, the owner and proprietor, began work Monday of this week and hopes to have the new hotel completed before winter sets in.
The present building will not be torn down but used as a part of the new hotel. The outside brick veneer will of course be removed and the interior refinished and rearranged entirely, to meet the plans for the new hotel. The entirely new part of the building will be built south of the present structure, where the sample rooms were formerly located. In the complete hotel there will be 80 modern rooms. Every room in the new part will be equipped with bath. Running water will be installed in all of the rooms, both old and new. The new part will be 50 feet long and 33 feet deep making the total length of the front 150 feet and the depth 33 feet throughout.
The lobby of the new hotel will be in the exact center. The dining room will be where the present lobby stands. The present dining room will be refinished and used for special occasions such as banquets, club meetings, etc. The parlors will be upstairs over the lobby. The dining room and the parlors will have large French windows and doors of a most attractive design. The ceilings will be beamed and finished in the most up-to-date manner. The floors will be of special composition. The exterior of the building will be of kellastone. Kuehn & Walsh of Huron, are the architects and they have made a drawing which shows how the new hotel will look when completed. Its appearance in every way comes up to the expectations of all those who have wished for a new hotel in Brookings. The construction work will be under the supervision of the A.M. Wold-Mark Construction Company out of Brookings. Mr. Dudley purchased the Leon Hotel a little over two years ago and came to Brookings. He was formerly the manager of the Royal Hotel in Huron. He has steadily been improving the service and making the hotel more popular. For over a year he has been planning on building a new hotel and with the financial depression well passed, he feels the time has come to give Brookings an up-to-date hotel of the size adequate to the needs of a city of its importance.
