The Brookings Area Community Band, one of the regions most time-honored summer traditions, has announced its 41st season.
The band is in its 19th year under the baton of David Reynolds, director of performing arts at SDSU. Reynolds said, We hope that music lovers of all ages will come and enjoy the entire series. Bring a lawn chair or a picnic blanket and find out what summer in Brookings is all about. Complimentary treats are served at each concert.
The first rehearsal is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 27 in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center, on the campus of South Dakota State University. There is still time for musicians register and join in on the fun.
Themes for this seasons concerts are:
- June 15 “See the U.S.A. Get ready for a musical journey through picturesque canyons and wide-open spaces.
- June 22 “The Big Top Comes to Brookings. The bands traditional Childrens Night captures the wonder and imagination of the circus, served up with a big helping of cotton candy.
- June 29 An American Salute. This patriotic concert includes a generous portion of flag-waving marches, a salute to veterans, and complimentary watermelon.
- July 6 “A Tribute to Leroy Anderson.” The band pays homage to an American icon who wrote music exclusively for the Boston Pops.
- July 20 Ice Cream Sunday.” The bands season finale features classics from stage and screen.
The band will also perform during the Brookings Summer Arts Festival and the Brookings 4th of July Parade.
All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. In case of rain, concerts are moved indoors to the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center and begin at 7:45 p.m. For more information on how to join the band or about the series, call Kathy Larsen at 605-695-0397.
