Live prescribed fire training for landowners slated near Astoria

BROOKINGS There will be a live prescribed fire training for landowners and agency officials on May 20, at the Oak Lake Field Station near Astoria.

The training is hosted by South Dakota State University Extension in partnership with the South Dakota Grassland Coalition, South Dakota Natural Resources Conservation Service, Audubon Great Plains, The Nature Conservancy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other partner organizations.

This training is free to attend, but registration is required. To register, visit extension.sdstate.edu/events and search fire. Registered participants will receive an email with full event information.

Participants must complete a classroom session before participating in the live fire training. Prior training sessions or the morning session on May 20 qualify.

Held from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., the day will include classroom instruction in the morning and hands-on training with equipment during a live burn in the afternoon. There will orientation/training on burn unit design and preparation, firebreak establishment techniques, legalities, understanding weather, communications, safety and other important topics.

Everyone should feel welcome to attend and learn about the prescribed fire resources and opportunities available to them, said Pete Bauman, SDSU Extension natural resources and wildlife field specialist. Were really looking forward to this opportunity to discuss prescribed fire management.

For more information, contact Bauman at 605-882-5140 or Peter.Bauman@sdstate. edu.
