Brookings Marketplace groundbreaking event set for May 14

BROOKINGS Brookings is planning a groundbreaking ceremony for the Brookings Marketplace, the anticipated future home of retailers Target and Aldi.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which will take place at 2 p.m. on May 14. Attendees are asked to park in the Dacotah Bank Center parking lot at 824 32nd Ave., cross 32nd Avenue and walk to the west side of the Research & Technology Center.

Im looking forward to celebrating the groundbreaking, Mayor Ope Niemeyer said. This project represents an investment in the Brookings community, and it has the potential to bring significant economic, social, and quality of life enhancements that our community has been asking for.

Target was announced as the anchor tenant of the Brookings Marketplace in December 2024. In addition to Target and national grocer Aldi, up to two smaller stores are expected to fill 18.53-acre site just east of Interstate 29 and north of Sixth Street.

The regional shopping center is under development by Ryan Companies US Inc., a national commercial real estate solutions provider headquartered in Minneapolis. Ryan Companies team members will join the groundbreaking ceremony.

Were proud to partner with the city on this transformative development, said Patrick Daly, vice president of real estate development, Ryan Companies. Brookings Marketplace represents a bold step forward in meeting long-standing community needs and creating a destination that will serve residents and visitors for years to come.

Deputy Mayor Nick Wendell said the Marketplace project is a testament to the citys commitment to economic development. The city has been working for many years to bring Target to town. The collaboration between City Council, city leadership, and Ryan Companies has made the communitys hopes for a Target a reality.

Target has been the top retailer requested by respondents to a survey by the Brookings Economic Development Corp. since 2013. In 2024 and in 2019, the top three choices in order have been Target, Aldi and Kohls.

The groundbreaking marks an exciting new chapter for Brookings, said City Manager Paul Briseno.

In addition to job creation, Brookings Marketplace businesses will generate sales tax revenue, which comprises about 45 percent of the citys annual budget.

The city uses sales tax revenue to fund services and programs that benefit Brookings residents, including public safety, public works, and parks and recreation.

Site preparation on the property began this spring and construction will stretch into 2026.
