Brookings Cubs top Dell Rapids PBR in season opener

DELL RAPIDS The Brookings Cubs opened the amateur baseball season with a 9-5 win over Dell Rapids PBR on Monday night.

The Cubs jumped out to a 4-0 lead and then held off PBR the rest of the way.

Brookings scored three runs in the second inning. Myles Rees came to the plate with one out and then launched one over the left field fence to make it 1-0. Parker Winghart then hit a single and Lincoln Vasgaard hit one over the center field wall to push the lead to 3-0.

Back-to-back walks from Noah Buss and Rees loaded the bases up with two outs for the Cubs in the third. Winghart then hit a single and that brought home Rhett Zelinksy. However, on the play, Logan Anderson was thrown out trying to come home and the half inning ended with Brookings up 4-0.

PBR got on the board in the bottom of the third as Beau Behrend hit an RBI double, making it 4-1 going into the fourth.

Brookings then struck for four more runs in the fourth. Vasgaard was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then Henry Hammrich hit a single with one out to put runners on the corners. Isaac Bonner would hit Vasgaard home with a single and Hammrich scored on a Chase McDaniel single to make it 6-1. Zelinsky then hit a sacrifice fly and Buss followed with an RBI double to make it 8-1.

Dell Rapids cut the lead to five in the bottom of the inning. Drew Sweeter hit an RBI double and then later scored on a ground out from Connor Spindler to make it 8-3 heading into the fifth.

Zach Puetz then hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh and cut the lead to 8-4.

Brookings would extend the lead back to five in the top of the ninth. Anderson and Jake Ammann each walked to begin the inning. Tucker Wookey would run for Anderson and he scored on a Vasgaard single. Chris Kropuenske then hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth for PBR but they werent able to score any more runs and the final was 9-5.

Brookings had 12 hits. Vasgaard was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Bonner was 3-for-4 with an rBI. Winghart was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Buss was 1-for-2 with an RBI. McDaniel was 1-for-5 with an RBI. Ammann was 1-for-1 and Hammrich was 1-for-5.

Wookey got the start for the Cubs and pitched four innings. He gave up three earned runs on five hits with no strikeouts or walks. Zach Shastay also pitched four innings and gave up one earned run on two hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Hammrich pitched the ninth and gave up one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

The Cubs will play Volga in their home opener on Wednesday at Bob Shelden Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
