Sioux Valley wins tournament in Flandreau

FLANDREAU The Sioux Valley softball team won a tournament in Flandreau over the weekend. The Cossacks beat Sioux Falls Christian on Friday and then beat McCook Central/Montrose and Flandreau on Saturday.

The Cossacks are now 8-5 and host a doubleheader against Sisseton on Tuesday, with the first game set to start at 4 p.m.

Friday

Sioux Valley 6, SF Christian 4

The Cossacks scored six runs in the first two innings and were able to hold off the Chargers the rest of the way in the first game of the tournament.

The Chargers scored two runs in the top of the first and both came on an error. However, the Cossacks answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Amelia Jacobson and Savana Guthmillre each hit RBI singles to tie the game. Zoe Hemmstad then walked with the bases loaded and the Cossacks took a 3-2 lead.

SFC tied the game in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly, but Sioux Valley answered again in the bottom of the second.

Jacobson hit another RBI single to give the Cossacks the lead back and then a two-run triple from Guthmiller made it 6-3 heading into the third.

The Chargers would cut the lead to 6-4 in the fifth but they were unable to score any more runs and Sioux Valley came away with the win.

Sioux Valley had eight hits. Jacobson and Guthmiller were each 2-for-3 with two RBIs. McKinley Schwab was 2-for-2 and Morgan Lemme was 1-for-2. Kassidy Smith was 1-for-3.

Schwab pitched a complete game for the Cossacks. She gave up four runs, one earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

Saturday

Sioux Valley 7, McCook Central/Montrose 4

Sioux Valley scored all seven runs in the final four innings after falling behind 4-0 in the first.

The Cougars first two runs of the game came on a double. They then scored runs on a triple and single to make it 4-0 heading into the second.

The Cossacks got on the board in the top of the third when Schwab hit an RBI double. Ella Jacobsen then hit an RBI single and Audrey Murano hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-3 in the fourth.

Sioux Valley pushed across four runs in the top of the fifth to give the Cossacks a lead. Schwab and Jacobson each scored on a steal of home to make it 5-4. Guthmiller then scored on an error and Murano hit an RBI double to make it 7-4.

Murano was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Schwab was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Jacobsen was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Smith was 1-for-3. Guthmiller was 1-for-2.

Abby Axtell started the game in the circle for the Cossacks and pitched two innings. She gave up four earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Schwab pitched the rest of the way and gave up no runs and two hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

Sioux Valley 8, Flandreau 1

The Cossacks took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and didnt look back. Guthmiller hit a two-run single and Hemmestad hit a two-run double in the top of the first.

Sioux Valley then pushed the lead to 5-0 in the third on a Murano single. Flandreau got that run back in the bottom of the inning on a double from Josie Sundermeyer.

The Cossacks scored two more runs in the top of the fifth. Murano hit an RBI double and then Smith hit a two-run inside the park home run to make it an 8-1 final.

Guthmiller and Murano were each 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Hemmestad was1-for-2 with two RBIs and Smith was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Lemme was 1-for-3 and Schwab was 1-for-3. Jacobsen was 1-for-2.

Schwab pitched a complete game. She gave up one earned run on four hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks.
