Brookings splits two games in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS The Brookings softball team split a pair of games on Friday afternoon. The Bobcats beat Pierre in a high-scoring affair and then fell to Sioux Falls Washington.

Brookings is now 6-4 on the season. The Bobcats will host Madison on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Brookings 14, Pierre 13

Kymber Buys double in the seventh inning gave the Bobcats a walk-off victory in the first game of the day. Layla Erickson hit a double with two outs and then Buys was able to hit her home with the double to left field.

Pierre scored a run in the first inning on a passed ball to take a 1-0 lead. Brookings answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Morgan Norgaard was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and Erickson reached on an error. Both runners then came home on a Tess Burns triple to make it 2-1 heading into the second.

Pierre regained the lead in the top of the third. Back-to-back doubles put two runners on with one out. One run came home on an error and another on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2 Governors.

The Bobcats scored four runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead again. Addy Bortnem walked to lead off the inning and Erickson hit one over the center field fence to make it 4-3 Brookings. Buys reached on an error and then scored on an error. Kendal Linstad then hit an RBI single and Taylee Connot ran for her. Connot came home on a Kinzey Grendler single to push the lead to 7-3 heading into the fourth.

The Governors then cut the lead to 7-5 in the fifth. The first run of the inning came on a ground out and then an RBI single made it a two-run game.

Brookings answered again in the bottom of the inning and got both of those runs back. Linstad and Keisha Cushing hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and both runners later came home on an error to make it 9-5 heading into the sixth.

Pierre would retake the lead in the top of the sixth. The Governors scored runs on an RBI single, a two-run double and an error to tie the game. Then two more runs from an error made it 11-9.

The Bobcats responded yet again in the bottom of the inning and scored four runs. Erickson and Buys hit singles to lead off the inning. Burns then reached on an error to load the bases up with no outs. Linstad hit a two-run double and Burns came home on a Cushing ground out to make it 12-11 Brookings. Grace Romsa then hit an RBI single to push the lead to 13-11.

Pierre then scored two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game and set up the heroics from Buys.

Brookings had 14 hits as a team. Linstad was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Erickson was 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Burns was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Buys was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Grendler was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Cushing and Romsa were each 1-for-4 with an RBI. Ramsie Hinricher was 1-for-1.

Grendler pitched the first four innings for the Bobcats. She gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Ella Pysk pitched the next two innings and gave up seven runs, two earned, on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Burns pitched the final inning and gave up no runs and three hits and had two strikeouts and no walks.

Sioux Falls Washington 13, Brookings 3 (6 inn.)

Brookings scored all of its runs in the fourth and was unable to stop the SFW offense in its second game of the day.

The Warriors scored three runs in the second and all three of them came on a single. They then added another run in the bottom of the third on a passed ball to make it 4-0 through three innings.

Erickson led off the top of the fourth with a walk and Buys followed with a single. Erickson would score on a fielders choice and Buys came home on an error by the catcher. Cushing then hit an RBI single to make it 4-3.

The Warriors answered with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. The first two runs came from a single and then an RBI double made it 7-3. Then a run from a ground out and two runs from an error pushed the lead to 10-3.

A run on a steal of home and a run from a sacrifice fly made it 12-3 in the fifth. Then an RBI single in the sixth ended the game due to the 10-run rule.

Brookings had just four hits in the game. Buys was 2-for-3, Morgan Norgaard was 1-for-2 and Cushing was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Burns had an RBI without a hit.

Burns pitched the first four innings. She gave up 12 runs, nine earned, on 12 hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Pysk pitched the final inning and a third and gave up one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
