On April 10-11, the local Brookings High School Health Occupations Students of America chapter competed at the state convention in Sioux Falls.
Seventeen Brookings students competed in a variety of events, including: Nurse assisting, dental science, public speaking, community awareness, forensics, anatomage, and a host of other events.
The chapter had three students qualify for internationals, which will be in Nashville, Tennessee, on June 18-21.
Michelle Lam took first place in researched persuasive writing and speaking. Her speech was on “GLP-1 Agonists: The Dangers of Open Access.”
Lauren Bortnem and Amelia Wendell took second place with their community awareness project on food insecurities in children.
Bortnem was also elected to represent South Dakota as a state HOSA adviser next year.
