The Brookings VFW Auxiliary hosts a Youth Program called Patriotism through Literacy.
This national program encourages VFW auxiliaries to provide patriotic stories based on actual events for students ages 5 to 18. A list is compiled by the National Youth Program of authors and books that are age appropriate for providing a historical event.
This is the fourth year that the George Dokken VFW No. 2118 Auxiliary has provided two books to each of the Brookings public schools and the three parochial schools in Brookings. Youth program chairman Jan Olson is in charge of contacting the librarians at the school libraries.
This year, a total of 18 books were presented.
