Bobcats fall in doubleheader against Rough Riders

BROOKINGS The Brookings baseball team dropped a pair of games to Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Tuesday night at Bob Shelden Field.

The first game was a tight one with SFR winning 6-5 but then the Rough Riders dominated game two and came away with a 12-0 victory in five innings.

Brookings is now 7-9 on the season and hosts a doubleheader against Huron on Thursday. The first game against the Tigers is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Game 1: SF Roosevelt 6, Brookings 5

The Bobcats scored two runs in the final inning but saw their comeback come up short in the first game.

The Rough Riders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. They hit a one-out double and then back-to-back RBI singles put SFR up two after the first inning.

SFR extended the lead to 4-0 in the top of the third. The Rough Riders led off the inning with back-to-back singles. A run then scored on a balk and another came home on a wild pitch.

Brookings got on the board in the bottom of the inning. Tre Christopherson led off the inning with a walk and Talon Hyde followed with a single. Chrstopherson advanced to third on the single and then scored on a Jase Bauer ground out to make it 4-1.

Roosevelt pushed the lead back to four in the top of the fourth. The Rough Riders hit a two-out single and that base runner then stole second and advanced to third on a defensive indifference. He then scored on a single to make it 5-1.

The Bobcats pushed two across in the bottom of the fourth. Maxten Jensen and Jude Meendering each walked with one out. Nolan Wagner ran for Jensen and scored on a single from Christopherson. Meendering came home on the same play as there was an error by the right fielder and it was 5-3 heading into the fifth.

An RBI double from SFR made it 6-3. Brookings got that run back in the bottom of the sixth. Meendering walked with one out and then scored on a Christopherson single to make it 6-4 heading into the final inning.

Bauer led off the final half inning with a double. He made his way to third on a ground out from Jay Harris. Bauer then scored on a ground out from Tane Friedrich but then a Jensen fly out ended the game.

Brookings had five hits in the loss. Christopherson was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Bauer was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Hyde was 1-for-3 and Tyson Antonen was 1-for-4. Friedrich had an RBI without a hit.

Kysin Reuer pitched the first four and two thirds innings for the Bobcats. He gave up six earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Hyde pitched the final two and a third innings and gave up no runs and no hits with one strikeout and two walks.

Game 2: SF Roosevelt 12, Brookings 0 (5 inn.)

The Rough Riders scored all of their runs in the third and fourth innings.

The first run of the game came on a bases loaded walk and then a two-run single made it 3-0. Another run came home on a fielders choice and then a run from defensive indifference pushed it to 5-0.

SFR then scored seven runs in the fourth. Two runs came home on an error and then an RBI single made it 8-0. A two-run double and two-run single pushed the lead to 12-0.

Brookings had two hits as a team. Cooper Schneider and Winston Plummer each went 1-for-2.

Meendering started the game for the Cats and pitched three innings. He gave up nine runs, six earned, on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Ryan Lockrem pitched an inning and gave up three earned runs on three hits with no strikeouts or walks. Christopherson pitched the last inning and gave up no hits or runs.
