BROOKINGS American Legion Post No. 74 was the setting Friday afternoon for a ceremony that South Dakotas at-large Congressman Dusty Johnson has undertaken multiple times across our state: the presentation of his House of Representatives coin and a Veteran War Veteran lapel to those who served in the war or in its era.
Looking obviously older than they did when they served about a half-century ago, they were accompanied in most cases by spouses, other family members, and other fellow veterans from other times of military service.
Calling them forward in groups of four, Johnson shook the hand of each and invited them to say a few words about their service, after which he handed them their lapel pin and commemorative coin. Each group was then applauded for their service.
Those honored and their branch of service included: Navy: Tim Arneson, Wayne Paulson, Linda Svec, Ron Tolrud, and Steve Whitecotton; Army: Beth Balling, Lee Crooks, Marty Deibert, Jack Hayne, Charles Johnson, Dennis Paul, Reuben Roth, Dennis Ryland, and Richard Seese. Honored posthumously was Curtis Peterson; accepting recognition for his service was his daughter, Tricia.
These stories are going to help inspire another generation of patriots who swore that oath to their country, the congressman said in his concluding remarks. The need for brave men and women is no lower now than it has ever been. Thank you for helping inspire the next generation of those patriots.
